Team South Goes Back-to-Back, capturing 2024 Trans-Murray Matchplay

trans-murray match play

It was an exciting week of golf for the 2024 Trans-Murray Matchplay. 66 golfers from both sides of the Murray River returned to Canberra to represent their region, and battle for supremacy in this annual Teams Matchplay event. This was the 11th running of the annual Trans-Murray Matchplay, and Team South was keen to repeat their success from 2023, while Team North was hoping to reclaim their past glory, and bring the "Murray" trophy home.

There was some incredible competition, great sportsmanship, and some truly awesome camaraderie throughout the week.

Day 1

The First day's action (Pairs/Ambrose), was an absolute CRACKER of a day at Royal Canberra Golf Club. The course proved why it is one of Australia's BEST courses, as it was in amazing condition, and a pure delight for our players. Laughs and smiles all around!

Highlights of the day include a "Trick" shot that ended up in a cart (Hey, play it as it lies), and one shot that actually went backwards (straight off the club!), as well as some MONSTER putts made all around. Team South jumped out of the gates with a solid 10-7 Lead, but anything can happen. Full results from Day 1 can be seen below:
2024TMMPR1

Day 2

Day 2 of the TMMP saw HEAPS of action, with Team North putting on a show at Gold Creek.  In the Alternate-shot pairs format of the day, it was a wave of light blue, as Team North mounted a stellar comeback, taking 11 matches to South's 6, edging ahead of Team South by an overall margin of 18-16.

2024TMMPR2

Day 3

There was excitement in the air for the all-important Singles matches on Day 3, at the picturesque Gungahlin Lakes. The scoring was tight, and both teams were feeling the pressure. In pleasant playing conditions, on a very playable course, players from both teams battled hard in their matches, as they knew that EVERY POINT MATTERED.

Following the round, the points were tallied as the players enjoyed drinks, food, laughter and stories of made (and missed) putts from the week.

When the points were finalised, Team South had dominated the final day, 20 matches to 12, resulting in a final Tournament Score of 36 South to 30 North. Team South had gone Back-to-Back!

Congratulations to Team South!!

The Hotel - Mantra on Northbourne

Mantra on Northbourne is perfectly located a short walk from the CBD and famous attractions such as Parliament House, the War Memorial and the National Gallery, and only a few metres from the city's thriving shopping precinct, hip bars and cool cafes.  They have Quad-Share accommodation in Two-Bedroom Apartments included in the package with the option to upgrade to a One-Bedroom Apartment (Single or Twin-Share) or a Single Hotel Room.

2025 Trans-Murray Match Play Format

The Trans-Murray Matchplay is a 3-day Teams event pitting teams from North and South of the Murray River. Each day's format mirrors the famous Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup matchplay events, with a combination of pairs (Best Ball and Alternate Shot) and singles matchplay. All golfers of all abilities are welcome to play. (Click here to see past results)

Round 1

Pairs Ambrose

Playing in teams of 2, each ambrose pair posts a stroke score for each hole and the best stroke score wins the hole. If the stroke score from each team is the same, the hole is halved. Teams which have the same handicap will play off scratch together. If a team has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole. Two shots difference = a shot on the two hardest holes and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Round 2

Pairs Alternate-Shot

Teams of 2 playing Alternate Shot with a twist. Players tee off, then team-mates swap drives and hit their second shot with their partner's ball. The team then chooses the best of the two shots, and continue alternating shots with the chosen ball. The best stroke score wins the hole. Teams off the same handicap will play off scratch. If a team has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Round 3

Singles Matchplay

One-on-One Matchplay. Each player is paired against a player from the opposite team. The best stroke score wins the hole. If the stroke score from each player is the same, the hole is halved. Players off the same handicap will play off scratch. If a player has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole. Two shots difference = a shot on the two hardest holes and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Team South Surges to Victory in 2023 Trans-Murray Matchplay

trans-murray match play

It was a thrilling week of golf for the 2023 TMMP, February 1-3, 2023. 60 golfers from both sides of the Murray River returned to Canberra to represent their region, and battle for victory (and the all-important “bragging rights”). This was the 10th running of the annual Trans-Murray Matchplay event, and with Team North having largely dominated the event over the years, Team South was determined to nab a victory, and bring the "Murray" trophy home to Victoria.

There was some incredible competition, great sportsmanship, and some truly awesome camaraderie throughout the week.

Day 1

The First day's action (Pairs/Ambrose), was a split field, held at the at the lovely Gungahlin Lakes GC and Gold Creek Country Club. The day saw Team North take the early lead, capturing 9.5 points to Team South's 5.5. It was a wild day, as the lead changed hands multiple times.

Day 2

Day 2 of the TMMP saw HEAPS of action, with Team South "Bringing all the smoke" to the competition. Royal Canberra Golf Club was an absolute treat, and the golfers were all smiles. In the Alternate-shot pairs format of the day, it was a wave of green early, with Team South dominating nearly all matches. But North fought hard (and fought the gusting winds) to claw back a few points. When the final putts dropped, Team South had won the day 9 to 6. Almost a mirror image of Day 1. This brought the event to 15.5 to 14.5, in favour of Team North. Only ONE match separating the sides.

Following the round, the points were tallied as the players enjoyed drinks, food, laughter and stories of made (and missed) putts from the week. Team captains Stuart Read (North) and Gav Doran (South) gave a few speeches, thanking the players for their great spirit and camaraderie throughout the week.  Following up on a small promise/wager, Gav even had a drink from one of Stuart's massive size-18 shoes (hereafter referred to as Das Boot).

When the points were finalised, Team South had captured the 2023 TMMP BY A SINGLE POINT, 30pts-29pts, courtesy of a 15.5 to 13.5 point day.

Team North captures epic 2022 Trans-Murray Matchplay by one point

trans-murray match play

It was a thrilling week of golf for the 2022 Trans-Murray Matchplay, Jan 15-18, 2022. 64 golfers from both sides of the Murray River returned to Canberra to represent their region, and battle for victory (and the all-important “bragging rights”).

There was some incredible competition, great sportsmanship, and some truly awesome camaraderie throughout the week.

Day 1

The First day's action (Pairs/Ambrose, held at the magnificent Royal Canberra GC) saw Team North in the lead, capturing 9 points to Team South's 7. It was a wild day, as the lead changed hands multiple times. Day 1 score: North 9, South 7.

TMMP_Day1

Day 2

For Day 2, (Pairs/ Alternate-Shot/Foursomes) at the picturesque Federal Golf Club, Team South clawed their way back by one point, courtesy of some strong play throughout. Day 2 score: North 16.5, South 15.5.

TMMP_Day2

Day 2's action was punctuated by a Hole-in-One by Team North's Noel Frogley, who aced the difficult (and long) par-3 12th hole. Congratulations, Noel! (See photos in the Day 2 Gallery)

Day 3

There was electricity in the air for the Singles matches on Day 3, at the lovely Gungahlin Lakes Golf Course. The scoring was tight, and both teams were feeling the pressure.

Following the round, the points were tallied (and re-tallied, and re-re-tallied ... it was THAT close), and when the Day's leaderboard was finalised, it showed a Tie for the day - 16 points each, and thus a victory to Team North by a SINGLE POINT, via a margin of 36.5 points to 35.5 points.

Congratulations to Team North!!
