New Zealand shines at 2024 SGA Queenstown Golf Week

New Zealand shines for 2024 Queenstown Golf Week

Amazing golf and jaw-dropping scenery greeted SGA Golfers once again

SGA returned to Queenstown, New Zealand, for the 2043 Queenstown Golf Week, and the trip proved to be everything (and more) that golfers look for in a golf trip.

With some of New Zealand's top courses on offer, including Millbrook's Coronet and Remarkables courses, Jack's Point and Queenstown Golf Club, our golfers were once again treated to an exceptional week of golf.

2024 Queenstown Golf Week Recap

ARRIVAL AND WELCOME DINNER

Following a short flight from Australia, golfers made their way to Ramada Queenstown, our home-base for the week. That night, guests enjoyed a hosted Welcome Party at the Queenstown Skyline Stratosfare restaurant, at the top of the famous Queenstown Gondola. Golfers and their partners were treated to good food and drinks, a relaxed vibe, sweeping views of Queenstown, and a jovial atmosphere as they met their fellow golfers (many set to be life-long friends) for the week.

DAY 1 - FIRST ROUND, MILLBROOK (REMARKABLES)

The event kicked off at the gorgeous Millbrook Golf Club, host OF the NZ Open. The 36-hole facility was a real treat for our golfers to experience it in all its glory. The course featured gorgeous scenery all around, which (if you're not careful) can distract you from the golf itself. Overall, it was a challenging and enjoyable golf course. The course staff were friendly and helpful, and our golfers had a great time. Thanks to the course and staff for hosting us and making it a memorable day.

DAY 2 - SECOND ROUND, JACK'S POINT GC

Day 2 of the 2024 Queenstown Golf Week saw golfers experience Jack's Point - a jaw-dropping, eyeball-widening, heart-pumping bucket-list golf course. With GORGEOUS views at every hole, it had our golfers taking more photos than golf swings. Trust us when we say: PLAY THIS COURSE!

Thanks to the entire team at Jack's Point for hosting us. Everyone had an absolute blast.

DAY 3 - REST DAY

A well-earned "rest day" for many of our golfers in Queenstown. There is SO MUCH to do in the area, it's hard to choose just one or two activities. While some of our guests took the opportunity to play some bonus golf, others took the day to explore Queenstown, "the Adventure Capital of the World"

DAY 4 - THIRD ROUND, MILLBROOK (CORONET)

Our golfers returned to Millbrook to enjoy the second of the two spectacular 18-hole courses. Great weather and a solid layout kept the smiles coming! Once again, thanks to the staff at Millbrook for your hospitality.

DAY 5 - FINAL ROUND, QUEENSTOWN GC

Five fun-filled days of world-class golf came to conclusion on the Friday, as our golfers played the picturesque Queenstown Golf Club. The amazing weather all week continued, as the sun came out, treating our golfers to more amazing scenery and some truly spectacular golf.

AWARDS DINNER

Following the day, golfers and their non-golfing partners converged at Brazz Steakhouse for the Presentation Dinner. With some tasty food (and PLENTY of beverages) consumed, the night was a relaxing and fun evening where golfers chatted about their glorious (and not-so-glorious, LOL) golf shots and moments across this memorable week.

The Glades

Today, you'll tee it up on The Glades, regarded by many as the finest golf course on the Gold Coast. Designed by Greg Norman, the 6420m Championship layout opened in 1999 and rapidly developed a reputation as the best golf course on the Gold Coast. The facility features superb playing surfaces with unique “Creeping bent grass” greens that ensure a superior putting surface all year round. The Glades is on 65 hectares of land with a total of 98 bunkers. Norman not only had a vision to create a challenging golf course on the Gold Coast, but he also retained 9 hectares of wetland area to create a natural wildlife sanctuary within the course.

Lakelands
Round 3/4 (Split fields) Thursday/Friday

Lakelands

Since opening in February 1997, the wonderful Lakelands golf course has forged a deserved reputation as one of Australia's very best golf courses. Situated in the heart of the Gold Coast adjacent to the luxurious Radisson Resort and next door to Palm Meadows, Lakelands was the first signature designed course in Australia by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Lakelands is often described as a thinking player's course with a unique Nicklaus flavour to the design.

Palm Meadows
Round 3/4 (Split fields) Thursday/Friday

Palm Meadows

Palm Meadows was the first golf resort course on the Gold Coast, and pioneered the Australian resort golfing boom. The challenging 350-hectare par 72 course was designed by renowned course-designer Graham Marsh. It measures 6319 metres off the championship tees and the opening and closing holes are rated among the greatest in Australian golf. Water comes into play on 14 holes and there are 82 sand bunkers around the course.

“The work that goes in behind the scenes to make this event run so smoothly must be huge. But it is really appreciated. It’s great to just turn up and have everything organised for you. It’s a great, well organised event playing nice courses with great people.”

Bright Country Golf Club

Situated at the foothills of the Victorian Alps, the Bright Country Golf Club is considered to be one of Victoria's best regional courses. Nestled alongside the Ovens River, the unique 18-hole course, designed by Tony Cashmore, features a par-72, 6097m easy-walking layout with manicured grass greens and beautifully developed tree-lined fairways. The course is a favourite of SGA Staff ... especially as there are no bunkers! (But don't let that fool you, it is challenging, fun and spectacular.).

Myrtleford Golf Club

Situated in the heart of the beautiful Ovens Valley, Myrtleford boasts an 18-hole course with tree-lined fairways - (some of the River Red gums are reputed to be 300 years old). It is a challenging course with accuracy at a premium on the narrow fairways and small greens. It's another easy-walking course, with most of the fairways being flat -- with only the 9th and 18th being on a hill.

The Bright Chalet

Located just outside of Bright, the Bright Chalet is a third-generation family business, which is popular year-round. Featuring 26 rooms over two floors, the chalet is the ideal home-base for our event. There is a full-service kitchen and dining area, dedicated bar, pool and function area. The rooms are comfortable and fully-equipped with large LCD screens, reverse-cycle air conditioning/heating, refrigerator, en-suite plus access to a balcony, with views of the surrounding mountains.

Event format - Single Stableford PLUS Pairs Better Ball

Here's everything you need to know about this 36-hole, weekend golfing adventure:

The Autumn Classic is a 36-hole golf tournament for amateur golfers. The event format for the individual grades is single stableford over two rounds. In addition, there is a team element (Pairs Better Ball/ 4BBB) event to add some extra fun and interest to the tournament. For this, only a team's best stableford score for each hole (i.e. Better Ball) is counted. These are added to make the daily team total. The team with the best total over two days wins the title.

Friday

Optional Warm-up

Get your weekend started early with an optional warm-up round. This will be an individual Stableford event, complete with prizes for the day

Saturday

Round 1

Individual Stableford PLUS Team Better Ball Stableford. A Team's best stableford score on each hole counts towards the Team Total.

Sunday

Round 2

Individual Stableford PLUS Team Better Ball Stableford. A Team's best stableford score on each hole counts towards the Team Total.

Rules:

  • Handicaps: Each pair will play via their official Golf Australia Handicaps, adjusted for the course/slope, etc. Daily results for all players will be entered on GOLF Link and will count towards players’ handicaps. Each player is personally responsible for ensuring that he or she is playing off the correct daily handicap on each day.
  • Nearest-the-Pin, plus Drive & Chip (NTP in 2 shots): will be held as some usual tasty ‘side action’ between teams.
  • Playoffs: In the event of a tie, a countback will be used to determine the winners.
  • Note that a player may only win one of the events (teams or singles). If the individual/singles winner is also one of the winning pairs team, then the next-highest-ranked individual score will be named the individual winner - this ensures we have three Champions for the event.
  • Prizes are awarded to the top Team, plus individual winner.

Mount Defiance Alliance capture 2024 William Buckley Classic

The Mount Defiance Alliance defy all to capture 2024 William Buckley Classic

The 2024 William Buckley Classic saw golfers from across the country descend upon the magnificent Moonah Links Resort for the 19th running of this event.

Under warm and mostly sunny skies all weekend, with a bit of wind in round 2, the Moonah Open and Legends courses presented our players with a challenging and thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

For the second time in 2 years, a pair of newcomers to SGA battled harder than the rest (both on the course, and in the post-round festivities) as they stormed home to a two-point victory, taking home the mighty Murrangurk Trophy.

Congratulations to The Mount Defiance Alliance (Michael Holt and Simon Alston), who fired back-to-back rounds of 44 stableford points to finish on 88, pipping The Point Addis Bashers (Ian Steer and Cam Thompson) who came agonisingly close with rounds of 44-43.  One putt...one chip...one lip-out over the weekend could have made the difference.

In third were The Sullivan Bay Gingerbread Men (Richard Fellner and Cameron Dunn) who sprinted to the line, but came up just short, with rounds of 41-44, for a total of 85.

2024 Foodbank Charity Golf Day a massive hit at Kingston Heath

2024 SGA Foodbank Charity Golf Day a massive hit at Kingston Heath

An absolute stunner of a day on Tuesday, Oct 1 for Victorian SGA golfers at the magnificent Kingston Heath Golf Club for our massive SGA Foodbank Charity Golf Day. A packed field of 118 golfers (including many first-time SGA players) enjoyed one of Australia’s best golf courses (and host venue of this year’s Australian Open). Players were greeted by mostly sunny skies, gentle breezes, pre-and post-round food, and the chance to win over $5000 in prizes during the day. Everyone had a blast as they teed-off for a great cause.
Of course, the BIG winners of the day were the thousands of Aussie families who receive support from Foodbank Victoria. With over $7,000 in donations generated from the golf day, including $3640 in player raffle proceeds and donations of $1500 from Kingston Heath, and $2000 from Social Golf Australia, Foodbank Victoria can create over 14,000 meals to help these families out! A massive achievement by all involved. THANK YOU!

SPECIAL THANKS

A special thanks to all of our amazing sponsors on the day, including Srixon Australia, MGI Golf, Garmin Australia, Drummond Golf, Heathcote Winery, and The Card Network. Without their tremendous support, this day would not have been possible.

Also, a very sincere thanks to Andrew Taylor and the staff and members of Kingston Heath GC for hosting us on their world-class golf course. The course was in amazing condition, and proved to be a treat for all of us to play.

Finally, SGA would like to send a hearty "THANKS" to all the players on the day. We hope to see you at a future SGA event!

There's still time to donate!

For every $1 Foodbank Victoria receive, they’re able to provide 2 meals for someone in need. Every dollar donated is two meals created. It’s that simple.

A FINAL WORD: “RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS”

"In the past few years we have all lived through some difficult times - from Covid, to lockdowns to cost of living increases. It has belted some folks and left others untouched. I am sure everyone knows somebody who has been severely affected.

For those who’ve had a significant drop in income, the simple act of putting food on the table for the family has become a challenge.

My wife and SGA founder Sally Pitt set some simple values for our family that we have adopted for our golfing community as SGA – Be Brave, Be Honest and Be Kind. I think the people involved in Foodbank operate in a similar way.

Random Acts of Kindness have become something that we aspire to in our family. It helps others but it also helps ourselves - it is a joyful thing to do that can inspire purpose, fun and happiness in yourself and in others.

This golf event and this initiative to support Foodbank helping families reflects our aspiration to kindness and our appreciation of people and organizations like Foodbank who do great work in our community to help others.

We are sincerely grateful to you all for contributing to this day and helping support Foodbank to get some meals to families who are doing it tough right now. We hope you had an enjoyable day and we hope you continue to look out for opportunities to make a difference by helping others with an act of kindness when you can."  -- MATTHEW PITT. SGA Founder

Birdie Fever storms home for 2024 SGA Championships victory

Birdie Fever tops largest-ever field at 2024 SGA Championships

Social Golf Australia's 2024 SGA Championships saw the largest-ever field battle for victory in SGA's flagship event, with 136 golfers plus their partners making the trek to the gorgeous Gold Coast for a week of fun, sun and friendships.

The Four-Round Event, which included both Graded/Individual competitions as well as a Teams Competition, was contested over the week of August 25-30, 2024. It was played at some of Queensland's best golf courses: Links Hope Island, Lakelands, The Glades and RACV Royal Pines,  with optional rounds at Palmer Gold Coast and Brookwater GC.

After a week of great golf, camaraderie and all-around fun, the competition began to heat up as the podium came into sight. There were some tight races in both the Grades and Teams events, with the results coming down to the last day (and in some cases, the very last hole.)

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING 2024 CHAMPIONS:

A Grade: Jason Beeston (Red Bears) made it back-to-back victories, taking top spot on 144 points, pipping Anthony Moscato (Birdie Fever) on 141. Third went to T-Rex (Stroke Kings) on 138.

B Grade: Mark Haase (Pin Flag Men), took the trophy on 139 over Neil Joliffe (Dude! Where's My Par?) on 133 and Jeff Stephens (Vic Invincibles) on 132

C Grade: Andrew Sharp (The Birdie Brothers) claimed victory on 137 points. 2nd went to Warrin Barrow (NSW All Stars) on 136, followed by Carl Ruttledge (Dude! Where's My Par?) on 132.

Ladies Grade: The largest-ever ladies field in SGA Championships history (30 competitors!) saw Rukshana Mohammed (Spice Girls) claim the hardware on 137 points, followed by Michelle Jarvis (Birdie Fever) on 132 points. Third went to Heather Alsop (The Grange Birdies) on 131 points.

Teams Result was a very tight race. After leading all week, team Dude! Where's My Par? (Carl Rutledge, Neil Jolliffe, Ian Jolliffe and Martin Greenhalgh - 406 points) couldn't muster enough in Round 4 to overcome a fast-finishing Birdie Fever (Anthony Moscato, Michelle Jarvis, Kina Hazell and Shane Hazell - 407 points). When the results were tabulated, Birdie Fever overcome an 11-point deficit in R4 to clutch victory.

And our partner courses Lakelands Golf Club, RACV Royal Pines, Links Hope Island, The Glades,  Brookwater Golf & Country Club, and Palmer Gold Coast for all their help. Stringybark Creek Freaks snatch 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout

Stringybark Creek Freaks snatch 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout

The 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout proved, once again, to be one of our most popular annual events.

44 players made a gaolbreak for Tocumwal Golf Club for the 19th staging of this annual event. With cold and rainy conditions giving way to sunny and clear skies, the quality of play and raucous good times were on show throughout the weekend.

Despite being short-handed when one of their team pulled-out due to Covid, the 3-handed Stringybark Creek Freaks stormed to victory on Sunday, courtesy of some stellar play. Congratulations to Matthew Pitt, Mick David and Dave Warwick, who returned a two-day total of 210, pippingd the fast-finishing The Greta Mob (Michelle Jarvis, Anthony Moscato, Tracey Grigoriou and Joan Swallow) on 211, followed by The Benalla Burglars (Gus Engley, Peter Engley, Brad Vigilante and Andre Van Gent) on 212.

Hainan Island a tropical treat for 2024 Mission Hills Masters

Hainan Island a tropical treat for 2024 Mission Hills Masters

The 2024 Mission Hills Masters - Hainan Island, the inaugural China event co-hosted by SGA and AYM Golf Tours, proved to be (in the words of a few guests) one of our "best-ever events". Featuring a week of island fun (followed by an optional 3-day extension for even MORE golf), the event had it all: World-class golf, 5-star service, a lush & tropical setting and stunning scenery.

Sunday - 2024 Mission Hills Masters Welcome Dinner

A total of 57 players and their guests & partners were welcomed to the Mission Hills Masters at a sumptuous Welcome Dinner Buffet. They met their fellow players, enjoyed a few beverages and received their souvenir Tournament Polos, caps, bag tags and more.

Monday - R1 - Sandbelt Trails

Day 1 of the Mission Hills Masters proved to be a cracker! Playing the Sandbelt Trails course (modeled after Melbourne's famed golf region), our golfers were treated to an impeccably-presented golf course, knowledgeable (and friendly) caddies, and 5-star treatment all around. Despite some high temps and humidity, our players had an absolute blast.

Tuesday - R2 - Lava Fields

Another stellar day, hosted at the gorgeous Lava Fields course. What a course! The lava rocks (everywhere) provided not only a great setting, but also some unexpected bounces. And the immaculate greens and fairways were a joy! In the event, a few players began jockeying for position, with Drew Hallam leaping to the top of A Grade (38-38), Ian Jolliffe leading B Grade (37-37), and Carl Rutledge atop C Grade (24-34).

Wednesday - Rest Day

Wednesday was a well-earned rest day. While some golfers chose to play another round of optional golf on one of the many stunning par-3 courses at Mission Hills, many other golfers took the day to explore the Mission Hills Resort's shops, indulge in the free Spa (including 68 Volcanic Pools) or just chill by the sparkling pool.  Still others took the free shuttle to the city of Haikou (to explore shopping, the Zoo, and authentic Hainan Cuisine) or a quick trip to the shops and attractions at Mission Hills Centerville.
