SGA Implements Model Local Rule E-5 to all SGA events.

Model Local Rule e-5

SGA Implements Model Local Rule E-5 to all events (to speed up play)

RULE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE SGA GOLF COMMITTEE:

There has been a bit of on-course discussion lately concerning what your options are when a ball is deemed lost or out of bounds.

Effective immediately, SGA will implement a new Local Rule at our events (Model Local Rule E-5, per R&A’s 2019 Rules of Golf), which allows “Alternative to Stroke and Distance for Lost Ball or Ball out of bounds”.

Essentially, the New Rule allows you take a drop at a "Reference point" (which can actually be IN THE FAIRWAY), under a Two-stroke Penalty.

Scenario:

A golfer (let's say SGA General Manager Mick David) whacks a drive from the tee box into the thick cabbage. (Potentially OOB, or Lost).

Mick’s Options:

  1. A) PLAY A PROVISIONAL (i.e. STROKE AND DISTANCE): On the tee, Mick could immediately announce he is now playing a "Provisional", thus re-teeing (under penalty of one stroke). He is now hitting his THIRD shot from the tee (i.e. The first stroke was lost, the second stroke is the penalty stroke, and the third stroke is his new/provisional). Assuming his provisional finds the fairway (never a sure thing), he is now lying 3 with his provisional, and (if he fails to find his original ball after a 3-minute search), will thus be playing his 4th shot from the fairway.

OR

  1. B) IMPLEMENT THE NEW (2019) MODEL LOCAL RULE E-5: Instead of playing a provisional, Mick could simply walk/drive/hobble to where he hit his shot and begin searching for his ball. If he and his playing partners cannot find it within the R&A’s 3-minute timeline, then he can take a drop, incurring a two-stroke penalty.

THIS DROP CAN BE TAKEN FROM TWO PLACES (SEE PHOTO BELOW): A “Ball Reference Point” (i.e. A line from the hole to where the ball likely came to rest, or crossed the OOB boundary), OR A “Fairway Reference Point” (A line from the hole to a spot on the fairway near the lost area).

In both cases, he is dropping within two club-lengths, no nearer the hole. Mick is now hitting his 4th shot. (i.e. Same result as if he had hit a provisional, above).

Note that this rule applies to any shot, NOT just off the tee. (i.e. Approaches, fairway shots, skulled bunker shots that fly the green and become lost, etc)

WHY WE MADE THIS DECISION:

  • It is allowed in the Rules of Golf
  • To speed up play dramatically
  • To allow for slightly more fun/enjoyment at our events

Note: Essentially, the end result of Option B is the same (or sometimes BETTER) than playing a provisional. If, for example, Mick had chosen option A (Provisional), and his provisional ball ALSO went OOB/Lost (highly likely in Mick’s case), then he would need to re-tee AGAIN (This time, playing his 5th shot off the tee), or Using Option B on his provisional (thus hitting 6 from the fairway.).

(THIS WOULD LEAD TO OPTION C: Walk off the course in disgust, and hit the 19th hole or the nearest pub.)

AUSTRALIA’S Largest Golf Club, Social Golf Australia, today announces a partnership agreement with Australia’s Biggest Golf Retailer, Drummond Golf.

The agreement will see $10,000 of Drummond Golf Gift Cards be awarded as prizes at many of SGA’s Open Golf Days across Australia. Additionally, they will be awarded during SGA’s Major Golf Events and Tournaments throughout the year.

The announcement marks Drummond Golf’s return to the SGA partner list, with the companies having partnered at various times over the last 18 years.

A STRONG RELATIONSHIP

“We are proud to partner with Drummond Golf once again,” explains Matthew Pitt, Founder and Managing Director of Social Golf Australia. “We have maintained a strong relationship with the team at Drummond Golf and been inspired by their commitment to supporting and growing the game. Our values around delivering high-quality customer service whilst having fun and enjoying golf have always been closely aligned. We've greatly appreciated Drummond Golf’s support of SGA events over the years, including Charity Golf days and Open Golf events. So it is exciting for us to welcome them as a major partner in 2022.”

“We have over 15,000 golfers in our community around Australia. They are people passionate about the game. Also, they love using the latest and greatest golf gear which is precisely what Drummond Golf provides. Thus, this partnership is an ideal match for both of us. Our golfers will be thrilled with this announcement, and we are delighted to be awarding vouchers for use at Drummond Golf in our event prize pools.” Pitt adds.

Ravi Abeyaratne, Marketing Director of Drummond Golf, echoed Pitt’s sentiments.

“It is our pleasure to help support a respected and thriving business like Social Golf Australia,” Abeyaratne says. “The team at SGA have always aimed to deliver high-value events and services at the industry’s very competitive prices. This matches our goals at Drummond Golf. We both share a commitment to providing high quality service, expert knowledge, convenience and competitive pricing. This is essential for us to put a partnership in place. We've watched SGA grow over the years to become the largest golf club in the country, and we are delighted to welcome SGA golfers at any of our 48 stores nationwide.”

SIMILAR BUSINESS PATHS

SGA and Drummond Golf have very similar histories, with both businesses considered trailblazers in the Australian Golf Industry. Further, both started in the Bendigo region in central Victoria. Drummond Golf, which was founded by Ray Drummond in 1974, began as a single-store retail business in Bendigo before expanding to its current network of 48 stores across Australia.  Similarly, SGA started as small, family-run business from a home office in the nearby country town of Heathcote. It was founded by Sally and Matthew Pitt in 2004. Through providing friendly, honest and reliable customer service, SGA has grown into Australia’s Largest Golf Club, offering the country’s best value golf handicaps, as well as golf trips, tours, tournaments and events.

The PGA TOUR has announced a long-term commitment to staging the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Victoria, with the biennial global team competition set to return to the iconic Sandbelt in 2028 and 2040. The 2028 Presidents Cup will mark the event’s fourth visit to Melbourne, matching Gainesville (Virginia, USA) for most Cups contested in one city.

The venue for the 2028 Presidents Cup will be announced at a later date. The Presidents Cup was staged at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in its three previous trips to Melbourne (1998, 2011, 2019), with the International Team defeating the U.S. Team in 1998 under the leadership of the late Peter Thomson, while the U.S. Team claimed the Cup in 2011 and 2019.

“Since the Presidents Cup was first staged in Melbourne in 1998, Australia and its passionate fanbase have played a leading role in the growth of the Presidents Cup,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “As the event continues to visit new corners of the globe, we remain committed to a presence in Melbourne and the Sandbelt region, a place our players and fans around the world hold in high regard. Our partnership with State of Victoria and Visit Victoria has been a winning combination, and we’re thrilled with the support we’ve received from Premier Andrews in securing the 2028 and 2040 dates.”

Australia was the Presidents Cup’s first international destination, and has since visited South Africa (2003), Canada (2007) and Korea (2015) in addition to twice returning to Australia.

A COUP FOR MELBOURNE

“Securing two more Presidents Cups is a real coup for Melbourne, promoting our city to the world and providing a boost for tourism and jobs,” said Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula.

The Presidents Cup was last played in 2019 at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club, which saw the U.S. Team mount a thrilling comeback on the final day to claim victory over a renewed International Team in Australia. The event will return in 2022 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, September 20-25, following a one-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re delighted that the Presidents Cup will be back in 2028 and 2040, cementing Melbourne’s position as a global events destination and the major events capital of Australia,” said Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements.

At the 2019 event, the PGA TOUR and First Tee announced the creation of the First Tee Australia, which marked the sixth international location for the youth development program. The chapter is managed by PGA of Australia and engages with five local community groups to reach underserved teenagers. As of November 2021, First Tee Australia services approximately 1,100 students at four locations in Melbourne and Tasmania with plans to expand throughout the country in the future.

Srixon announces new Q-Star Tour Golf Ball

Srixon

SRIXON®, a global leader in golf ball technology and innovation, introduces the new Q-STAR TOUR golf ball.

The new Q-STAR TOUR delivers the softest golf ball with tour-level performance from Srixon. The Q-STAR TOUR is calibrated to fit moderate swing speed players that seek the distance and spin of a tour-caliber ball.

“The new and improved Q-STAR TOUR continues to deliver tour-caliber performance with a softer feel compared to our other tour-level offerings,” said Brian Schielke, General Manager at Srixon. “This ball provides the distance all golfers need with the greenside spin and control to attack the toughest of pins.”

Tour performance starts around the greens. The fourth generation Q-STAR TOUR delivers with an ultra-thin, premium urethane cover that’s coated in Slide Ring Material (SeRM). Q-STAR TOUR features Srixon’s Spin Skin with SeRM coating that increases friction on every strike.

That added friction and bite means more spin and more control when attacking even the toughest of pins.
In fact, during robotic testing commissioned by Srixon, the new Q-STAR TOUR delivered almost 400RPM more spin than a few close competitors.

Meanwhile, the FastLayer Core, with its graduated transition from soft inner core to firm outer edge, behaves like a core with thousands of layers, providing distance and softer feel without compromise. The new Q-STAR TOUR features the softest FastLayer Core with tour-caliber performance from Srixon.

Key Technologies:

  • FastLayer Core: The FastLayer Core offers distance and soft feel without compromise due to a gradual transition from soft inner core to firm outer edge.
  • SpinSkin with SeRM: A urethane coating with flexible molecular bonds digs deep into wedge and iron grooves for increased friction on every strike and maximum spin.
  • New Alignment Aid: A new, longer side stamp helps align those crucial putts.
  • 338 Speed Dimple Pattern: Providing a penetrating ball flight in all conditions, the optimal dimple design increases lift and deduces drag to maximize distance.

RRP: $46.95

Report: Aussie golf boom in full swing

Report: Aussie Golf Boom in Full Swing

Golf Australia has announced that 2020-2021 saw an Aussie Golf Boom, with record growth in club participation and total participation, with a 6.4 percent increase in club members and a 21 percent (210,000) year-on-year rise in round players, according to AusPlay data.

The 2020-21 Golf Club Participation Report, which was prepared by Golf Business Advisory Services, showcases a combination of Golf Australia’s club member participation data and Sport Australia’s AusPlay data, with both data sets providing the golf industry a year-on-year view of the game's participation trends.

Aussie Golf Boom 2021

Aussie Golf Boom: Newcomers tee off

More than 24,000 new players joined golf clubs in 2020-21, with the 6.4 percent increase the largest jump in percentage terms recorded since data collection began in 1970, taking the total number to 409,970.

Junior members also experienced a major increase, with 16 percent more kids under-18 joining their local club.

AusPlay’s data reveals that Australian Golf’s vision to be a sport for all is gradually becoming a reality, with an estimated 1,204,000 total golf participants playing 9-hole or 18-hole rounds of golf in the 2020-21 period.

This is supported by Golf Australia’s nine-hole round data which experienced 20 percent growth with more than 517,000 rounds played in 2020-21.

At club level, Victoria experienced the biggest lift in membership (up 8.9 percent)  despite access to golf clubs being limited during the ongoing pandemic, while all states experienced substantial growth. South Australia grew by 7.2 percent, WA by 7 per cent, QLD by 6.4 percent, NSW by 4.8 per cent, Tasmania by 4.6 percent and the Northern Territory by 0.5 percent.

Golf Australia Chief Executive James Sutherland said the findings were “monumentally encouraging for the game”, pointing out that the results buck the gradual decline in golfers endured between 2000-2019.

“Our purpose is simple – we want more Australians playing more golf. There are many different forms of golf making it truly a game for everyone,” he said.

“It’s fun, it can be played at any age, and it’s proven to be good for your health. These are just some of the factors driving this phenomenal growth.

“Interestingly, these latest figures tell us there are far more casual golfers that are not members of a club than there are club members. This suggests we have a fantastic launching pad to continue to grow our sport and bring new people to our game. We want to keep driving this by making the sport more accessible and creating more options to play to ensure golf continues to be a sport for all,” he said.

Sutherland said that the launch in December of the Australian Golf Strategy – a strategic plan for the entire golf industry – has highlighted participation as the most important factor in the health of the industry into the future.

“So many new people have come to the game in recent times, they need to be embraced so they remain in the game while we continue to innovate to appeal to more Australians.

“It will be vital for us to understand these newcomers - what they want is not going to be the same as it has been in the past, and we need to acknowledge that and evolve to suit our new markets,” said Sutherland.

“The elite game is also incredibly important in providing role models for our young golfers to aspire to, and we’re excited to see some of Australia’s best players in action at the Vic Open this week at 13th beach.

“The elite game is also incredibly important in providing role models for our young golfers to aspire to, and we’re excited to see some of Australia’s best players in action at the Vic Open this week at 13th beach. It’s been fantastic to see the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia and the WPGA Tour Australasia getting back into the full swing of things this season and there’s no doubt the tour will play an important role in building on the 16% growth in junior members this year.

Key findings of the report include:

  • Positive member movement was evident in all key market segments. Both member clubs and social clubs enjoyed growth around six percent, driven by growth in male numbers of more than seven percent. Junior numbers also enjoyed substantial growth, increasing by 15 percent compared to the prior year.
  • All states except Northern Territory enjoyed growth well in advance of recent trends. Despite long periods of course closures due to lockdown measures, Victoria recorded the largest growth of 8.9 percent.
  • New members coming to our sport are younger than the broader club member age profile, with 60 percent of new members under the age of 50. Of new members, 34 percent were between 15-34 in 2020-21, compared to 25 percent in 2019-20.
  • Female members make up 19 percent of all golfers.
  • The national new club member attraction rate was 13 percent, with an attrition rate of 10 percent.  Of all new golfers in 2020-21, 60 percent were under 50 years old, compared to the number of 30 percent of current members.
  • The average age of club members in Australia is 56.9 years. The average for male members is 55.3 years and for women, 64.3 years.
  • There were 11,769 million competition rounds played in 2020-21, representing a 12 percent increase over 2019-20.
  • The report estimates ‘total golf participants’ at 1.204 million people, according to Ausplay, up 21 percent on the previous year.
  • Get Into Golf, the adult introductory program, saw 313 clubs and facilities registered, with 224 actively participating, and 6594 participants in 1230 programs. Of the total participants, 5564 or 84 percent were female.

Golf industry unites to support families in need

2021 Charity Golf Initative

Golf industry unites to support families in need

Social Golf Australia and Kingston Heath GC bring golfers and businesses together for Charity Golf initiative to help Foodbank offer over 17,000 meals.

2021 Charity Golf Initative

While the game of golf and its players can sometimes be associated with exclusivity, the Australian reality is that more than 1300 golf clubs play an important role in communities large and small around the country.

Globally, golf is one of the most charitable industries on the planet. Its businesses, governing bodies, organisations and partners donate billions of dollars to help the less-fortunate in the community. In its history, the US PGA TOUR, alone, has donated/generated over $3 billion to charitable organisations and programs.

Golf clubs, too, have traditionally embraced the “community spirit”; for over 100 years clubhouses across Australia (and the world) have acted as “hubs” for the local communities and towns, hosting weddings, funerals, birthdays, charity fundraisers and community celebrations every week for all the members of local communities.

So it will come as no surprise that a recent Australian Charity Golf drive generated unprecedented support from the Australian Golf Industry’s largest and most well-known businesses, clubs and brands.

SGA'S ‘10K FOR 10K’ CHARITY DRIVE INITIATIVE

Social Golf Australia’s (SGA) recent ‘10K for 10K’ charity golf initiative – an online appeal and golf event in partnership with Kingston Heath Golf Club – encouraged SGA’s 10,000+ customers and members to support Foodbank Victoria in creating 10,000+ meals for struggling Australian families. The appeal, which ran throughout the month of November, shattered all expectations and goals, generating in excess of $8500, which translates to over 17,000 meals to be created by Foodbank.

Like many community-based initiatives, The 10K for 10K drive started as a small idea. SGA, a family-owned business, simply wanted to help other Australian families that had been battered by Covid, bushfires, storms and financial difficulties over the last two years. As Australia’s Largest Golf Club and Community, SGA put out the call to its 10,000+ members, its 10,000+ Social Media fans and the broader golf industry, creating and hosting a charity golf day, online fundraiser and raffle.

Without hesitation, the golf industry and its supporting businesses immediately jumped on board to support the initiative, with thousands of dollars in prizes, support and donations provided by industry “heavyweights”, including Kingston Heath Golf Club, Srixon & Cleveland Golf, Garmin Golf, MGI Golf, The Eastern Golf Club, Callaway Golf, The PGA of Australia, Drummond Golf, Heathcote Winery, The Card Network, Australian Professional Shopfitters and Posisocks.

GOLFERS DIG DEEP

SGA’s golfers, too, dug deep into their wallets for the cause. A sold-out field of 120 Melburnian golfers played in the highly-publicised charity golf day on November 16th at Melbourne’s spectacular Kingston Heath Golf Club, while also contributing money via silent auction bids and on-the-day contest entries. Meanwhile, countless other golfers from across the country chipped-in via online donations and raffle ticket purchases.

The host club for the day, Kingston Heath Golf Club, also went above and beyond for the drive. In addition to making their world-class golf course available for the charity golf day, the club also provided a sizable $2,000 donation to the cause, the single-largest donation of the drive.

The $8500 (and growing) donation was wholeheartedly welcomed by Foodbank Victoria.

“We can’t thank Social Golf Australia and Kingston Heath Golf Club enough for their support of Foodbank Victoria,” said Jac Fletcher, Head of Fundraising, Foodbank Victoria. “It’s been such a challenging time across the country, with one in six adults going without food over the last 12 months.  Thanks to the support of Social Golf Australia and their members, we can provide more than 17,000 meals to those doing it tough in the lead-up to Christmas.”

FAMILIES WERE THE BIGGEST WINNERS

Following the drive, SGA Founder and Managing Director, Matthew Pitt, thanked everyone who contributed to the drive, noting that this initiative was about more than a simple charity golf day.

“In the past two years we’ve all lived through a once-in-a-century event, which has truly belted some folks,” explains Pitt.

“For those who’ve had a significant drop in income, the simple act of putting food on the table for the family has become a challenge. We’ve all struggled through lockdowns, but it must have been so much harder for those with the cloud of financial pressure looming.

“My wife (and SGA founder) Sally Pitt set some simple values for our family that we have adopted for our golfing community as SGA – Be Brave, Be Honest and Be Kind. I think the people involved in Foodbank operate in a similar way.

“This initiative in partnership with the Kingston Heath Golf Club to support Foodbank helping families reflects our shared aspiration to kindness, as well as our appreciation of people and organizations like Foodbank who do great work in our community to help others.

“We are sincerely grateful to all of our golfers, sponsors, partners, supporters and clubs for contributing to this initiative and helping support Foodbank to get some meals to families who are doing it tough right now. We hope everyone can continue to look out for opportunities to make a difference by helping others with an act of kindness when you can.”

Drummond, Callaway boost 2021 SGA Foodbank Charity Day

Callaway Drummond

Drummond Golf, Callaway Golf add to 2021 SGA Foodbank Charity Day prize pool

Social Golf Australia is proud to welcome Drummond Golf and Callaway Golf South Pacific to the family of generous prize sponsors for the upcoming 2021 SGA Foodbank Charity Golf Day.

The event, which aims to help feed struggling families who have been battered by Covid, bushfires, floods and more, is set to be played on November 16, 2021 at Kingston Heath Golf Club. The day will feature celebrity golfers, charity auctions, and a variety of golf contests -- with proceeds benefitting Foodbank Victoria.

Callaway Golf is renowned for developing innovative products that help golfers hit longer and straighter shots from tee to green; controlled, higher-spinning shots around the green; and smooth, accurate putts. Callaway Golf consists of 5 powerful brands — Callaway, Odyssey, Toulon Design, OGIO and TravisMathew – that together offer golfers all over the world everything they need – clubs, balls, bags, apparel, footwear, bags, accessories – to play better and enjoy the game more.

For the event, Callaway Golf has generously donated a new Callaway Driver and a Callaway Bag to the prize pool.

Mavrik Driver

PRIZE DONATION: CALLAWAY MAVRIK DRIVER

The Callaway MAVRIK driver delivers incredible ball speeds powered by Callaway's A.I.-designed Flash Face SS20 architecture, high-strength FS2S Titanium, AND their new Cyclone Aero shape, which differs drastically from their recent driver shapes to promote faster head speed.

The Cyclone shape is shallower from front to back, with a flatter crown, and a sole design that sweeps upward dramatically in the rear to create a markedly higher trailing edge. That’s how Callaway have decrease drag for increased clubhead speed.

The head’s internal and external weighting includes a single, fixed 5g weight positioned at the sole’s back-center, to promote mid-level spin and a moderate draw bias.  See more about Mavrik here

SGA is extremely thankful for the generosity of these sponsors, and we are hopeful that the incorporation of these prizes into our event will help us to reach our goal of raising $5000 for Foodbank Victoria, which will help generate over 10,000 meals for Australian families.

ABOUT FOODBANK VICTORIA (Beneficiary of this event)

Whether it’s everyday emergencies or in times of crisis, Foodbank Victoria has been providing vital food relief to vulnerable Victorians for more than 90 years. Through their network of 533 charity partners across the State, they are able to provide 1.2 million meals a month to Victorians in need. And while supporting their charity partners is at the core of what they do, as the State’s dedicated emergency food relief organisation, they’re also ready to assist Victorians through times of crisis.

For every $1 Foodbank Victoria receive, they’re able to provide 2 meals for someone in need.

Every dollar donated is two meals created. It’s that simple.
