2024 Foodbank Charity Golf Day a massive hit at Kingston Heath

2024 SGA Foodbank Charity Golf Day a massive hit at Kingston Heath

An absolute stunner of a day on Tuesday, Oct 1 for Victorian SGA golfers at the magnificent Kingston Heath Golf Club for our massive SGA Foodbank Charity Golf Day. A packed field of 118 golfers (including many first-time SGA players) enjoyed one of Australia’s best golf courses (and host venue of this year’s Australian Open). Players were greeted by mostly sunny skies, gentle breezes, pre-and post-round food, and the chance to win over $5000 in prizes during the day. Everyone had a blast as they teed-off for a great cause.
Of course, the BIG winners of the day were the thousands of Aussie families who receive support from Foodbank Victoria. With over $7,000 in donations generated from the golf day, including $3640 in player raffle proceeds and donations of $1500 from Kingston Heath, and $2000 from Social Golf Australia, Foodbank Victoria can create over 14,000 meals to help these families out! A massive achievement by all involved. THANK YOU!

SPECIAL THANKS

A special thanks to all of our amazing sponsors on the day, including Srixon Australia, MGI Golf, Garmin Australia, Drummond Golf, Heathcote Winery, and The Card Network. Without their tremendous support, this day would not have been possible.

Also, a very sincere thanks to Andrew Taylor and the staff and members of Kingston Heath GC for hosting us on their world-class golf course. The course was in amazing condition, and proved to be a treat for all of us to play.

Finally, SGA would like to send a hearty "THANKS" to all the players on the day. We hope to see you at a future SGA event!

There's still time to donate!

For every $1 Foodbank Victoria receive, they’re able to provide 2 meals for someone in need. Every dollar donated is two meals created. It’s that simple.

A FINAL WORD: “RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS”

"In the past few years we have all lived through some difficult times - from Covid, to lockdowns to cost of living increases. It has belted some folks and left others untouched. I am sure everyone knows somebody who has been severely affected.

For those who’ve had a significant drop in income, the simple act of putting food on the table for the family has become a challenge.

My wife and SGA founder Sally Pitt set some simple values for our family that we have adopted for our golfing community as SGA – Be Brave, Be Honest and Be Kind. I think the people involved in Foodbank operate in a similar way.

Random Acts of Kindness have become something that we aspire to in our family. It helps others but it also helps ourselves - it is a joyful thing to do that can inspire purpose, fun and happiness in yourself and in others.

This golf event and this initiative to support Foodbank helping families reflects our aspiration to kindness and our appreciation of people and organizations like Foodbank who do great work in our community to help others.

We are sincerely grateful to you all for contributing to this day and helping support Foodbank to get some meals to families who are doing it tough right now. We hope you had an enjoyable day and we hope you continue to look out for opportunities to make a difference by helping others with an act of kindness when you can."  -- MATTHEW PITT. SGA Founder

Unprecedented three-team playoff decides the 2021 WBC Champions

December 4-5, 2021

A massive, unprecedented three-team sudden-death playoff provided a fitting end to a massive week of golf and fun at the 2021 William Buckley Classic.

Played at 13th Beach Golf Links on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, the 16th running of the WBC was contested under mostly clear skies, with occasional bouts of the area's notorious "3-club" winds making an appearance on Saturday.

Day 1 ("The Ambush") saw our 16 teams of Bushrangers tee it up at the world-famous Beach Course, which has hosted the Victorian Open for many years. Our two-person Ambrose teams (which were all feeling a bit shaky following Friday evening's festivities) battled the wind as they scrambled for a spot on the leaderboard. When the final putt was drained after day one,  three teams found themselves tied at the top on 40 points, with 5 other teams within reach.

Day 2 ("The Assault") proved a much calmer, but no less exciting, affair. Played on the Creek Course, our teams (which were now feeling the full effects of two full nights of the post-golf festivities) worked their way around the beautiful course.  As always with our Majors, the tee sheets were a seeded draw, meaning that the last-placed teams teed off first, while the leaders teed off last.

As the final few teams were playing their 17th/18th holes, a quick check of the online leaderboard showed that this race was going to be close. When the final putts were holed, and the scorecards tallied (and re-tallied) it became apparent that an unprecedented sudden-death playoff would be required!

PLAYOFF!

The first-ever play-off in WBC history featured drama, action and good-natured fun. Three teams took the stage in Alternate-shot (Foursomes) action as the gallery watched on.

The first two teams, Jason Pratt & Joe Amenta (The Barwon Heads Sir Robins), along with Gavan Doran & Dean Connell (The Torquay Hookers) teed off on the first hole of the Creek Course. Meanwhile, a third team, Kirk Hayward and Travis Graham (The Point Addis Bashers) -- who had unknowingly (due to a scoring glitch) also qualified for the playoff -- had rushed back to their car to get their gear, shoes, etc.

A double-bogey 6 from the Torquay Hookers saw them eliminated by the Sir Robins' bogey-5. Meanwhile, a MASSIVE tee shot by Kirk Hayward set the Bashers up for success, followed by a stunning chip by Travis Graham to 6 inches to seal their birdie and the win!

See below for the video, plus team scores and photo gallery.

Thanks to all who played - it was an exciting and memorable weekend of fun!

Winners all-round at 2021 SGA Foodbank Charity Golf Day

Winners all 'round at 2021 SGA Foodbank Charity Golf Day

A massive field of 120 golfers teed-off at the immaculate Kingston Heath Golf Club for the 2021 SGA Foodbank Charity Golf Day. Despite an early morning drizzle, the weather cleared just before tee-off, ensuring an amazing day for all involved.

As the day progressed, the golfers' smiles became wider and wider as they experienced one of the world's best golf courses; walking the same fairways that have hosted some of the world's best golfers.

Indeed, it was a truly special day for everyone.

Celebrity golfers on the day included NBL/NBA Stars Mark Bradtke and Nigel Purchase, and Richmond FC players Jack Graham and Nathan Broad. Representatives from SGA partners Srixon Australia and Garmin Australia also teed it up on the day.

Of course, the BIG winners of the day were the thousands of Aussie families who receive support from Foodbank Victoria. With over $8,000 in donations generated from the golf day (including entry fees, side donations and entries for the putting competition and Raffle), Foodbank Victoria will be able to create over 16,000 meals to help these families out! A massive achievement by all involved. THANK YOU!

CHARITY PUTTING CONTEST

Following the round, the ticketed "Charity Putting Contest" proved to be an extremely exciting affair, as entrants battled in a "Nearest To The Cup" challenge. Every putt in The Putting Competition had added significance as well: all putts which "beat" the attempts by the celebrity golfers and SGA Team members meant that SGA would add a $10 donation to the Charity kitty.

With the charity putt measuring a staggering 60 feet, many competitors almost needed their laser rangefinders to judge the distance! To put this in context, a PGA Tour Pro has about a 3% "Make percentage" from this distance, meaning that a putt of that length by an amateur is highly unlikely.

But if 2020-2021 has taught us anything, it's to expect the unexpected. So it will come as (almost) no surprise that two players, Tom Tomlin and Shaun Condron, somehow managed to sink their massive putts - forcing a putt-off. In the end, Shaun's tie-breaking putt edged Tom's attempt. Shaun won a new Callaway Mavrik driver and Tom walked away with an MGI Zip X1 Buggy, kindly donated by Callaway and MGI Golf, respectively.

And with 15 total putts beating the celebrity attempts, SGA added $150 into the Foodbank kitty.

A FINAL WORD: “RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS”

In the past two years we have all lived through a once-in-a-century event. It has belted some folks and left others untouched. I am sure everyone knows somebody who has been severely affected.

For those who’ve had a significant drop in income, the simple act of putting food on the table for the family has become a challenge. We’ve all struggled through lockdowns, but it must have been so much harder for those with the cloud of financial pressure looming.

Happy Days prevails at the 2021 SGA Championships

2021SGAChampionships

Team "Happy Days" prevails at the 2021 SGA Championships

The 2021 SGA Championships was, put simply, like no other SGA Championships in the history of the event.

Following months of uncertainty around Covid-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions, SGA made the call to shift the event from the traditional August timeslot to October. It was hoped that this change would allow golfers from outside of Queensland to be able to travel to the Gold Coast without quarantine or travel restrictions.  However, even a two-month delay was not enough, as border restrictions tightened even further.  The event was thus limited only to golfers from Queensland.

In the end, a small group of 19 hearty Queenslanders teed it up for the event. And what the group lacked in quantity, they more than made up for in quality.

WARM-UP DAY

Players teed off at Lakelands for the traditional "Fun" Ambrose golf day. The day was a perfect warm-up for the week, played on a great course.

Following the golf, players all enjoyed the prize presentation, followed by the traditional Welcome Dinner.

Photo Gallery - Warm-up Day

ROUND 1

The 2021 SGA Championships officially teed off with Round 1 at RACV Royal Pines Resort. Sadly, Covid restrictions and border closures meant it was the smallest field in our Championships history (with our normal 100+ field whittled down to 19).

In very pleasant "Golf Conditions" the players thoroughly enjoyed their day, with Glenn Burgess taking the day's honours in the A-Grade/individual event. (With the smaller-than-normal field, the usual A/B/C grades were combined into one.)

Photo Gallery - Round 1

ROUND 2

It was Deja Vu all over again...

While Day 2 of the 2021 SGA Championships had a different course (this time, the lovely Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club's Palms Course), it had a similar finish. Glenn Burgess once again found himself on the podium. It seems that Glenn may have had his eyes on some sort of unprecedented wire-to-wire victory at this event.

Photo Gallery - Round 2

ROUND 3

Following a much-needed "Rest Day" (which gave some golfers the opportunity to rest, while some others teed it up at Palmer Gold Coast for a "Bonus Round of golf"), competitors arrived at The Glades for Round 3 of the event.

Unfortunately, Round 3 was soon washed-out by exceptionally heavy rains which battered the Gold Coast (and much of Queensland and NSW).

This is the first time in the SGA Championships history that SGA were forced to cancel a round, and we (and the players) were all gutted to be forced off the course.

The call was soon made to reduce the event to a 3-round tournament.

rainout

ROUND 3 (Take 2)

Mother Nature continued to batter the Gold Coast with overnight (and early morning) rains, but after a short delay, the skies cleared, and our players took to the Palm Meadows course for Round 3.

When the scores were tallied at the end of the day, team "Happy Days" found themselves at the top. With a 3-round aggregate of 298 Stableford points (including a magnificent 102 points on the final day), they obliterated the field.

Congratulations to Glenn Burgess, Jan Booth, Maureen Mathews and Russell Mathews. They have taken home the 2021 SGA Championships Team Trophy, and will have their name etched on the perpetual trophy, and included (digitally) on the SGA Championships Honourboard.

And for individual results, it will come as no surprise that Glenn Burgess was the individual champion, having dominated all week, and finishing with a wire-to-wire-leading 3-round total of 104 Stableford points. Well done, Glenn. Runner-up in individual was Neil Jolliffe, followed by Ian Hoather, both of the "Capricorn Can't Play Golf" team.

SPECIAL THANKS

SGA would like to send a hearty "THANKS" to all the players, who soldiered on through a fun (but challenging) week. While it was the smallest event in our history, it was no less important or prestigious (and we hope it was a blast for you all). We had many obstacles in getting this event up and running, so we appreciate the effort you all put in to get there and play. And we sincerely hope that we can be back to a full field of over 100 next year.

We would like to give a special thanks to all of our sponsors and partners for the week. Notably Srixon Australia & New Zealand, Garmin Australia, Heathcote Winery, The Card Network, and Mantra Hotels. And our partner courses Lakelands Golf Club, RACV Royal Pines Resort, Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club, Brookwater Golf & Country Club, The Glades Golf Club, and Palm Meadows Golf Course for all their help.

Finally, we would like to give a shout out to our SGA Qld Manager David Rushmore for helping out this week, and a extra-special-with-sugar-and-cherry-on-top shout to the amazing Julie Ridler from Gold Coast Direct Charters, without whom the week would not have been possible. Her amazing hosting, driving, scheduling, managing, photographing and everything-else-ing this week were world-class. THANKS JULIE! (We recommend to all our SGA Fans -- if you are ever on the Gold Coast, and need a lift/tour/transfer, give Julie a call. You won't be disappointed).

And that's a wrap! We hope to see you all at next year's event

SGA Championship Testimonials

“I wanted to personally thank you all for a great week. As always, from a customers point of view, everything was fantastic and seamless – no doubt due to the efforts behind the scenes. I keep saying it, but this is a slick operation from a great group of folks. Looking forward to my next event with SGA.”

The 2021 SGA Tasman Classic – Top fun in Tasmania

Golfers at Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm, 2021

Top fun in Tasmania at 2021 Tasman Classic

SGA Golfers tackle Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm

Nearly 70 SGA golfers teed it up over the weekend of April 30-May 2, 2021 for the 2021 Tasman Classic. They enjoyed 54 holes of high-quality golf over three days, with rounds of golf at the breathtaking and world-renowned courses: Barnbougle Dunes and The Lost Farm on Tasmania’s main island.

Apart from a quick bit of fog that seemed to disappear almost as quickly as it arrived, the weather was spectacular - with the "raingear" never making an appearance. Great fun was had by all.
Congratulations to the following 2021 Tasman Classic players who won their respective flights:
A Grade
Michael Freake, winning by 6 points over Raymond Berzins, followed by Nick Sutherland and overnight leader Steve Lambrakakis.
B Grade
Jerry Nguyen, 3 points over Glen McMillan, followed by Adam Sutton & Stan Kommo
C Grade
Rebecca Heng, by ONE POINT over Anh Nguyen, with Simon Lovett & Nilesh Singh rounding out the top-3.

“Another incredibly run event at one of the greatest golfing destinations in the world.  I’m sure more goes into hosting an event of this size than we see as the customers, but you did an amazing job looking after us all so well for the whole 3 days”
