2022 Victorian SGA Tour Championship a massive hit

End of year event a smash at the stunning Victoria Golf Club

SGA's final event of the 2022 Victorian Season was a massive hit, with 77 golfers teeing off at the magnificent Victoria Golf Club, for the 2022 2022 Victorian SGA Tour Championship.

The event, which featured over $5k in prizes over two separate competitions (Open Event and Tour Event), proved to be an exciting conclusion to an action-packed season.

Despite early winds and occasional rain throughout the afternoon, our golfers enjoyed playing on a course that had just recently hosted Australia's top professional golfers (men and women) at the Australian Open. Playing a course the calibre of Victoria, in near-tournament conditions, was a real treat, and there were smiles all around.

Overall, it was a challenging and enjoyable golf day. The course staff were friendly and helpful, and our golfers had a great time. Thanks to the course and staff for hosting us and making it a memorable day.

The Open Day event, played as individual stableford, was won by Edward Klusik, on a solid 34 points. He pipped Paul Corcoran by a single point (33) and Lewis Read/Matthew Adlard on 32.

The Tour Championship Flight, which was open to the top 25 golfers in the season-long Order of Merit, was a tightly-fought competition. In the end, Chris Morgan's remarkable 39 stableford points was enough to grab the top spot, and claim the trophy for the 2022 Vic Tour Championship. Second place went to Drew Hallam (38) and third went to Neill Bell (37).

Chris' name is now etched in the SGA Tour Honourboards. Congratulations.

Novelty prizes: NTP 4th hole: Joel Evans, 7th: Chris Fernandez, 14th: Pete Calverley, 16th: Byron Holder, LD: Male: Lewis Read, Female: Rita Petrovs.

Team Redbacks dominate at the 2022 SGA Championships

Team "Redbacks" dominate at the 2022 SGA Championships

The 2022 SGA Championships saw the largest-ever field compete in SGA's flagship event, the 2022 SGA Championships, with 116 golfers making the trek to the gorgeous Gold Coast for a week of fun, sun and friendships.

Following two years of Covid-forced obstacles, our golfers were champing at the bit to compete in the event, which featured over $30,000 in prizes, as well as 7 full days of perfect weather.

WARM-UP DAY

Players teed off at Palm Meadows for the traditional "Fun" Ambrose golf day. The day was a perfect warm-up for the week, played on a great course, in the glorious Gold Coast sunshine, with plenty of laughs and good times.

Following the golf, players all enjoyed the prize presentation, followed by the traditional Welcome Dinner.

ROUND 1

The 2022 SGA Championships officially teed off with Round 1 at the amazing Links Hope Island.

In perfect "Golf Conditions" the players thoroughly enjoyed their day, with Steve Francis taking the day's honours in the A-Grade/individual event, Tim Hibbard on top in B-Grade, Lindsay Scott capturing C-Grade and Kina Hazell atop the Ladies Grade. In the Teams event, it was Team 1770 in first, closely followed by Redbacks SA and NSW All Stars 2.

ROUND 2

Round 2 of the 2022 SGA Championships saw golfers enjoy the stunning, private Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club's Pines Course. One of the most challenging and enjoyable courses of the week, The Pines was a favourite of the field, and had our golfers smiling from ear to ear.

Daily results: A Grade: Dennis Williams, B-Grade: Lincoln Tucker, C-Grade: Lindsay Scott, Ladies: Andrea Ray.

Daily Teams: Redbacks SA took 1st, 3 Kiwis and a Convict captured 2nd, and SGA Vic Tour 1 were in 3rd.

REST DAY - BROOKWATER

Wednesday was a (for some) much-needed "Rest Day", which gave some golfers the opportunity to chill out, hit the beach, etc.

Some others, however, teed it up at the amazing Brookwater for a "Bonus Round of golf". One of the best (if not THE best) courses in Queensland, Brookwater proved a treat for the golf-mad players who made the trip.

Rest Day Photos

ROUND 3

On the Thursday, competitors arrived at Palmer Colonial for Round 3 of the event. Originally scheduled for Palmer Gold Coast/Robina Woods, the SGA Team made the call to move the round to Colonial due to poor playing conditions on Robina's front-nine (following months of rain on the Gold Coast). The SGA Team had anticipated a move such as this, so had previously arranged tee times at Colonial as a contingency/back-up measure.

The day featured the inaugural "SGA Dress-Up Day", where golfers were encouraged to emulate long-time fashionista Stuart "Krusty" Carlisle, and wear something colourful and fun.

Daily Results: A-Grade: Rhys Hugglestone, B-Grade Tim Hibbard, C-Grade: Lindsay Scott, Ladies: Jackie Penno.

Teams Daily:  1: Redbacks SA, 2: No Wuks Given, 3: Fairway to Heaven.

Photo Gallery - Round 3

ROUND 4

Mother Nature continued to shine, with Round 4 played under perfect conditions at the remarkable Lakelands GC.

Daily Results: A-Grade: Troy Tracey, B-Grade: Stuart Carlisle, C-Grade: John Banfield, Ladies: Maureen Mathews.

Daily Teams: Team 1770, followed by Redbacks SA, and (2021 Champs) Happy Days.

When the scores were tallied at the end of the day, team "Redbacks SA" found themselves at the top. With a 3-round aggregate of 415 Stableford points they obliterated the field. They pipped Team 1770 (380 points) and NSW All-Stars 2 (also on 380)

Congratulations to Lindsay Scott, Lincoln Tucker, Bruce Russell and Andrew McPherson. They have taken home the 2022 SGA Championships Team Trophy, and will have their name etched on the perpetual trophy, and included (digitally) on the SGA Championships Honourboard.

And for individual results, Dennis Williams was the individual A-Grade champion, finishing with a 4-round total of 134 Stableford points. He pipped Troy Tracey and David Warwick, both on 130. B-Grade saw Johnny Nguyen on top with 134 points, over Lincoln Tucker (133) and Trevor Slogrove on 130. C-Grade had Lindsay Scott on top with an incredible 144 points, followed by Thanh Tran on 125 and Gav Doran on 124. For the Ladies Division, Lois Fyfe took top honours with 125 points, winning on countback over Kina Hazell. Andrea Ray took 3rd on 122.

Team North takes epic 2022 TMMP by a point

2022 Trans-Murray Matchplay

Team North captures epic 2022 Trans-Murray Matchplay by one point

trans-murray match play

It was a thrilling week of golf for the 2022 Trans-Murray Matchplay, Jan 15-18, 2022. 64 golfers from both sides of the Murray River returned to Canberra to represent their region, and battle for victory (and the all-important “bragging rights”).

There was some incredible competition, great sportsmanship, and some truly awesome camaraderie throughout the week.

Day 1

The First day's action (Pairs/Ambrose, held at the magnificent Royal Canberra GC) saw Team North in the lead, capturing 9 points to Team South's 7. It was a wild day, as the lead changed hands multiple times. Day 1 score: North 9, South 7.

TMMP_Day1

Day 2

For Day 2, (Pairs/ Alternate-Shot/Foursomes) at the picturesque Federal Golf Club, Team South clawed their way back by one point, courtesy of some strong play throughout. Day 2 score: North 16.5, South 15.5.

TMMP_Day2

Day 2's action was punctuated by a Hole-in-One by Team North's Noel Frogley, who aced the difficult (and long) par-3 12th hole. Congratulations, Noel! (See photos in the Day 2 Gallery)

Day 3

There was electricity in the air for the Singles matches on Day 3, at the lovely Gungahlin Lakes Golf Course. The scoring was tight, and both teams were feeling the pressure.

Following the round, the points were tallied (and re-tallied, and re-re-tallied ... it was THAT close), and when the Day's leaderboard was finalised, it showed a Tie for the day - 16 points each, and thus a victory to Team North by a SINGLE POINT, via a margin of 36.5 points to 35.5 points.

Congratulations to Team North!!

Final points leaderboard
