Mount Defiance Alliance capture 2024 William Buckley Classic

The Mount Defiance Alliance defy all to capture 2024 William Buckley Classic

The 2024 William Buckley Classic saw golfers from across the country descend upon the magnificent Moonah Links Resort for the 19th running of this event.

Under warm and mostly sunny skies all weekend, with a bit of wind in round 2, the Moonah Open and Legends courses presented our players with a challenging and thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

For the second time in 2 years, a pair of newcomers to SGA battled harder than the rest (both on the course, and in the post-round festivities) as they stormed home to a two-point victory, taking home the mighty Murrangurk Trophy.

Congratulations to The Mount Defiance Alliance (Michael Holt and Simon Alston), who fired back-to-back rounds of 44 stableford points to finish on 88, pipping The Point Addis Bashers (Ian Steer and Cam Thompson) who came agonisingly close with rounds of 44-43.  One putt...one chip...one lip-out over the weekend could have made the difference.

In third were The Sullivan Bay Gingerbread Men (Richard Fellner and Cameron Dunn) who sprinted to the line, but came up just short, with rounds of 41-44, for a total of 85.

Indented Heads nab 2023 William Buckley Classic

The 2023 William Buckley Classic featured a Battle Royale as golfers from across the country descended upon 13th Beach GC for the 18th running of this event.

Mother Nature proved to be the toughest opponent throughout the weekend, as she greeted our players with howling winds, rain, chilly temperatures and even an early morning earthquake to the Bellarine Peninsula.

But the magnitude 5.1 tremor wasn't the only earth-shattering event on the Sunday, as a pair of newcomers to SGA made the earth move under their feet as they stormed home to a one-point victory over the field.

Congratulations to The Indented Heads (Andrew Murray & Brett Murray), whose 2-day total of 86 Stableford points (rounds of 46 + 40), edged them one point ahead of a crowded leaderboard, which saw the top 6 teams separated by only 4 points. They pipped The Point Addis Bashers (Jarrad Young & Grant Nuttall), and The Barwon Heads Sir Robins (Chris Moody & Rusty Dent) on 85 points. Rounding out the top-6 were The Murrangurk Masters (Ian Steer & Cam Thompson) on 84, The Point Lonsdale Cavemen (John Brugman & Rob Lugton) on 84, and The Bream Creek Freaks (Matt Pitt & Mick David) on 82 points. Team South surges to victory in 2023 TMMP

Team South Surges to Victory in 2023 Trans-Murray Matchplay

trans-murray match play

It was a thrilling week of golf for the 2023 TMMP, February 1-3, 2023. 60 golfers from both sides of the Murray River returned to Canberra to represent their region, and battle for victory (and the all-important “bragging rights”). This was the 10th running of the annual Trans-Murray Matchplay event, and with Team North having largely dominated the event over the years, Team South was determined to nab a victory, and bring the "Murray" trophy home to Victoria.

There was some incredible competition, great sportsmanship, and some truly awesome camaraderie throughout the week.

Day 1

The First day's action (Pairs/Ambrose), was a split field, held at the at the lovely Gungahlin Lakes GC and Gold Creek Country Club. The day saw Team North take the early lead, capturing 9.5 points to Team South's 5.5. It was a wild day, as the lead changed hands multiple times.

2023TMMP_Day1

Day 2

Day 2 of the TMMP saw HEAPS of action, with Team South "Bringing all the smoke" to the competition. Royal Canberra Golf Club was an absolute treat, and the golfers were all smiles. In the Alternate-shot pairs format of the day, it was a wave of green early, with Team South dominating nearly all matches. But North fought hard (and fought the gusting winds) to claw back a few points. When the final putts dropped, Team South had won the day 9 to 6. Almost a mirror image of Day 1. This brought the event to 15.5 to 14.5, in favour of Team North. Only ONE match separating the sides.

2023 TMMP Day 2 scores

Day 3

There was excitement in the air for the all-important Singles matches on Day 3, at the picturesque Federal Golf Club. The scoring was tight, and both teams were feeling the pressure. In pleasant playing conditions, on a very playable course, players from both teams battled hard in their matches, as they knew that EVERY POINT MATTERED.

Following the round, the points were tallied as the players enjoyed drinks, food, laughter and stories of made (and missed) putts from the week. Team captains Stuart Read (North) and Gav Doran (South) gave a few speeches, thanking the players for their great spirit and camaraderie throughout the week.  Following up on a small promise/wager, Gav even had a drink from one of Stuart's massive size-18 shoes (hereafter referred to as Das Boot).

When the points were finalised, Team South had captured the 2023 TMMP BY A SINGLE POINT, 30pts-29pts, courtesy of a 15.5 to 13.5 point day.

2023TMMPSingles1

2023TMMPSingles2

Congratulations to Team South!!

FUN FACT: Over the last five years of the event, four out of five results have been determined by one point.

Final points:

Team D1 D2 D3 Total Points
North 9.50 6.00 13.50 29.00
South 5.50 9.00 15.50 30.00

For day-by-day scores and matches, see the leaderboard on Golf Genius.

Special Thanks

We would like to thank all the competitors (and their spouses/partners/plus-ones) for an incredible week. The success of these events is mostly due to the quality of the participants, and we believe that our golfers are of the highest quality anywhere!

A very special thanks to our sponsors Srixon Australia & New Zealand, Garmin and our hotel partner, Mantra on Northbourne.

The William Buckley Classic Format

  • The William Buckley Classic is a 36-hole siege for teams of two playing two-ball ambrose.
  • Each team will be assigned a handicap by the organisers on the basis of official Australian handicaps and information supplied by the Bushrangers. The handicapper will be governed by a commitment to rewarding good play according to a player’s ability.

Rules:

  • Each member hits their shot, then chooses the best of the two, and continues play from there. Teams play their chosen best ball on each shot and may place their ball half a club length (about 50cms) from where the chosen ball lay, no nearer the hole. Balls must be placed in the same cut as the chosen ball. In the interests of fast play from tee to green, teams are NOT required to mark with a tee and precisely measure from the chosen ball as they play each shot. Once on the green, Bushrangers should mark near the chosen best ball so both team members play from near enough to the exact same position.
  • The event features a Rodeo Rule, which requires a minimum number of drives for each team member. Each team’s rodeo requirements will appear on their scorecard.
  • Nearest-the-Pin & Longest Drive: will be held as some usual tasty ‘side action’ between teams.

Playoffs:

  • In the event of a tie, a sudden-death playoff will be conducted. Teams play together as a twosome (taking alternate strokes playing one ball). Teams can determine the order as each member takes their first shot. This order is then continuous and carries over from one hole to the next until the playoff is decided.
