The Stroke Kings capture 2023 SGA Championships

The 2023 SGA Championships saw the largest-ever field compete in SGA's flagship event, with 129 golfers making the trek to the gorgeous Gold Coast for a week of fun, sun and friendships.

The Four-Round Event, which included both Graded/Individual competitions as well as a Teams Competition, was contested over the week of August 27-Sept 1, 2023. It was played at some of Queensland's best golf courses: RACV Royal Pines, Sanctuary Cove (The Palms course), The Glades and Palmer Gold Coast courses. PLUS, there were optional bonus rounds at Lakelands and Brookwater GC

After a week of great golf, camaraderie and all-around fun, the competition began to heat up as the podium came into sight. There were some tight races in both the Grades and Teams events, with the results coming down to the last day (and in some cases, the very last hole.)

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING 2023 CHAMPIONS:

A Grade: Jason Beeston (Red Bears) took top spot on 139 points, pipping Nick Sutherland (Birdie Fever) on 138 (who will rue a missed putt on 18). Third went to Kurt White (Par, Bogey, Beer, Birdie!) on 135.

B Grade had a THREE-WAY-TIE for first, all on 127 points. On Countback, the B-Grade Champion is Michael Houghton (VIC Invincibles), pipping Lindsay Scott (Redbacks SA) and Ronald Naidu (The Stroke Kings)

C Grade Champion was crowd favourite (and everybody's "Brah"), Frank Elisaia (Grumpy Old Men) on 131 points. 2nd went to Matt Carver (The Living Legends) on 127, followed by Ian Steer (The Harriets) on 122.

Ladies Grade also saw a Two-way tie for first, with Laurel Meyers (The One Putts) pipping Susan Okeby (Hole in Fun) on countback on 122 points. Third went to Lisa Garioch (Sunraysia) on 110 points - who notably went back-to-back-to-back-to-BACK on the Ladies Long Drive, nabbing the prizes in all 4 rounds!

The Teams Result was also a tight race, with plenty of rollercoaster-style action on the leaderboard all week. In the end, team Stroke Kings (Justin Gao, Ronald Naidu, Arvin Kumar and Thiruchenthuran Thiruloganathan (aka T-Rex) grabbed the hardware, with a 4-day total of 382 Stableford points. In second, two shots back, were "Par, Bogey, Beer, Birdie!" (Neill Smith, Kurt White, Paul White and Alex Robertson) on 380, with Birdie Fever (Anthony Jacobs, Nick Sutherland, Ryan Hassan and Richard Chatfield) rounding out the top 3 on 378.

The presentation award dinner was a fully-attended affair, with many stories exchanged between old and new mates. The night capped our week of $30,000+ in prizes, and also featured our annual Raffle Draw, which featured over $5000 in prizes, including vouchers for players and Non-Golfing Partners to join us at a variety of SGA Events, including our brand-new Mission Hills Masters - Hainan Island in June 2024.

There was also an emotional moment during the presentation dinner, when the Sally Pitt Award recipient was named. Long-time SGA player and supporter Ivan Jones was nearly brought to tears when his name was called. A worthy recipient of this prestigious award (which is awarded to the player for being honest, brave and kind, all the qualities that SGA Co-Founder Sally embodied, and by which she lived her life).

Lakelands Golf Course

Today features an optional (and fun) Team Ambrose Golf Day, where you can warm-up for the week in a jovial and relaxing atmosphere. The wonderful Lakelands Golf Course has forged a deserved reputation as one of Australia's very best golf courses, and was the first signature designed course in Australia by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Lakelands is often described as a thinking player's course with a unique Nicklaus flavour to the design.

The Glades

Today, you'll tee it up on The Glades, regarded by many as the finest golf course on the Gold Coast. Designed by Greg Norman, the 6420m Championship layout opened in 1999 and rapidly developed a reputation as the best golf course on the Gold Coast. The facility features superb playing surfaces with unique “Creeping bent grass” greens that ensure a superior putting surface all year round. The Glades is on 65 hectares of land with a total of 98 bunkers. Norman not only had a vision to create a challenging golf course on the Gold Coast, but he also retained 9 hectares of wetland area to create a natural wildlife sanctuary within the course.

The day also features our fun (and optional) Round 3 Fancy Dress Day, where you can "Go Bold" with your day's attire!

Home of the PGA of Australia's TPS Murray River tournament, The Cobram Barooga Golf Club is a stunning 36-hole golf complex. The Old Course, consistently rated amongst the region's best, has been crafted between large stands of red gums and other native plants and trees native to the Murray River region. The West Course is the newer of the two courswes, and features a "resort" style, with wider fairways and larger greens with more slope.

Murray Downs Golf and Country Club

Rated as the Number 1 Golf Course on the Murray River, the championship 18-hole golf course at Murray Downs is a previous winner of Victorian PGA course of the year, and is consistently voted in the top resort courses around Australia (Currently ranked number 47). The course has some great signature holes including the 5th with a long water carry over to the green. The undulating greens are complemented by well-manicured fairways, and thoughtful tee positions and pin placements.

Event format - Single Stableford PLUS Pairs Best Ball

Here's everything you need to know about this 36-hole, weekend golfing adventure:

The Autumn Classic is a 36-hole golf tournament for amateur golfers. The event format for the individual grades is single stableford over two rounds. In addition, there is a team’s 4BBB event to add some extra fun and interest to the tournament. For this, only a team's best stableford score for each hole (i.e. Better Ball) is counted. These are added to make the daily team total. The team with the best total over two days wins the title.

Optional Warm-up

Get your weekend started early with an optional warm-up round. This will be an individual Stableford event, complete with prizes for the day

Saturday

Round 1

Individual Stableford PLUS Team Better Ball Stableford. A Team's best stableford score on each hole counts towards the Team Total.

Sunday

Round 2

Individual Stableford PLUS Team Better Ball Stableford. A Team's best stableford score on each hole counts towards the Team Total.

Rules:

Handicaps: Each pair will play via their official Golf Australia Handicaps, adjusted for the course/slope, etc. Daily results for all players will be entered on GOLF Link and will count towards players’ handicaps. Each player is personally responsible for ensuring that he or she is playing off the correct daily handicap on each day.
Nearest-the-Pin & Longest Drive: will be held as some usual tasty ‘side action’ between teams.
Playoffs: In the event of a tie, a countback will be used to determine the winners.
Note that a player may only win one of the events (teams or singles). If the individual/singles winner is also one of the winning pairs team, then the next-highest-ranked individual score will be named the individual winner - this ensures we have three Champions for the event.
Prizes are awarded to the top Team, plus individual winner.
