Mount Defiance Alliance capture 2024 William Buckley Classic

The Mount Defiance Alliance defy all to capture 2024 William Buckley Classic

The 2024 William Buckley Classic saw golfers from across the country descend upon the magnificent Moonah Links Resort for the 19th running of this event.

Under warm and mostly sunny skies all weekend, with a bit of wind in round 2, the Moonah Open and Legends courses presented our players with a challenging and thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

For the second time in 2 years, a pair of newcomers to SGA battled harder than the rest (both on the course, and in the post-round festivities) as they stormed home to a two-point victory, taking home the mighty Murrangurk Trophy.

Congratulations to The Mount Defiance Alliance (Michael Holt and Simon Alston), who fired back-to-back rounds of 44 stableford points to finish on 88, pipping The Point Addis Bashers (Ian Steer and Cam Thompson) who came agonisingly close with rounds of 44-43.  One putt...one chip...one lip-out over the weekend could have made the difference.

In third were The Sullivan Bay Gingerbread Men (Richard Fellner and Cameron Dunn) who sprinted to the line, but came up just short, with rounds of 41-44, for a total of 85.

The William Buckley Classic Format

  • The William Buckley Classic is a 36-hole siege for teams of two playing two-ball ambrose.
  • Each team will be assigned a handicap by the organisers on the basis of official Australian handicaps and information supplied by the Bushrangers. The handicapper will be governed by a commitment to rewarding good play according to a player’s ability.

Rules:

  • Each member hits their shot, then chooses the best of the two, and continues play from there. Teams play their chosen best ball on each shot and may place their ball half a club length (about 50cms) from where the chosen ball lay, no nearer the hole. Balls must be placed in the same cut as the chosen ball. In the interests of fast play from tee to green, teams are NOT required to mark with a tee and precisely measure from the chosen ball as they play each shot. Once on the green, Bushrangers should mark near the chosen best ball so both team members play from near enough to the exact same position.
  • The event features a Rodeo Rule, which requires a minimum number of drives for each team member. Each team’s rodeo requirements will appear on their scorecard.
  • Nearest-the-Pin & Longest Drive: will be held as some usual tasty ‘side action’ between teams.

Playoffs:

  • In the event of a tie, a sudden-death playoff will be conducted. Teams play together as a twosome (taking alternate strokes playing one ball). Teams can determine the order as each member takes their first shot. This order is then continuous and carries over from one hole to the next until the playoff is decided.

Stringybark Creek Freaks snatch 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout

Stringybark Creek Freaks snatch 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout

The 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout proved, once again, to be one of our most popular annual events.

44 players made a gaolbreak for Tocumwal Golf Club for the 19th staging of this annual event. With cold and rainy conditions giving way to sunny and clear skies, the quality of play and raucous good times were on show throughout the weekend.

Despite being short-handed when one of their team pulled-out due to Covid, the 3-handed Stringybark Creek Freaks stormed to victory on Sunday, courtesy of some stellar play. Congratulations to Matthew Pitt, Mick David and Dave Warwick, who returned a two-day total of 210, pippingd the fast-finishing The Greta Mob (Michelle Jarvis, Anthony Moscato, Tracey Grigoriou and Joan Swallow) on 211, followed by The Benalla Burglars (Gus Engley, Peter Engley, Brad Vigilante and Andre Van Gent) on 212.

See full leaderboard below.

Thanks to all of our amazing players for joining us on an epic weekend. You were all top-notch. We couldn't have a great weekend like this without you!

Hainan Island a tropical treat for 2024 Mission Hills Masters

Hainan Island a tropical treat for 2024 Mission Hills Masters

The 2024 Mission Hills Masters - Hainan Island, the inaugural China event co-hosted by SGA and AYM Golf Tours, proved to be (in the words of a few guests) one of our "best-ever events". Featuring a week of island fun (followed by an optional 3-day extension for even MORE golf), the event had it all: World-class golf, 5-star service, a lush & tropical setting and stunning scenery.

Sunday - 2024 Mission Hills Masters Welcome Dinner

A total of 57 players and their guests & partners were welcomed to the Mission Hills Masters at a sumptuous Welcome Dinner Buffet. They met their fellow players, enjoyed a few beverages and received their souvenir Tournament Polos, caps, bag tags and more.

Monday - R1 - Sandbelt Trails

Day 1 of the Mission Hills Masters proved to be a cracker! Playing the Sandbelt Trails course (modeled after Melbourne's famed golf region), our golfers were treated to an impeccably-presented golf course, knowledgeable (and friendly) caddies, and 5-star treatment all around. Despite some high temps and humidity, our players had an absolute blast.

Tuesday - R2 - Lava Fields

Another stellar day, hosted at the gorgeous Lava Fields course. What a course! The lava rocks (everywhere) provided not only a great setting, but also some unexpected bounces. And the immaculate greens and fairways were a joy! In the event, a few players began jockeying for position, with Drew Hallam leaping to the top of A Grade (38-38), Ian Jolliffe leading B Grade (37-37), and Carl Rutledge atop C Grade (24-34).

Wednesday - Rest Day

Wednesday was a well-earned rest day. While some golfers chose to play another round of optional golf on one of the many stunning par-3 courses at Mission Hills, many other golfers took the day to explore the Mission Hills Resort's shops, indulge in the free Spa (including 68 Volcanic Pools) or just chill by the sparkling pool.  Still others took the free shuttle to the city of Haikou (to explore shopping, the Zoo, and authentic Hainan Cuisine) or a quick trip to the shops and attractions at Mission Hills Centerville.

Thursday - R3 - The Vintage + The China & Australia Friendship Cup

Round 3 marked the inaugural China & Australia Friendship Cup. Held at the The Vintage Course, over 100 Australian and Chinese Golfers enjoyed a day of fun, friendship and camaraderie. This was a landmark occasion for all involved, with the language of golf transcending all barriers. Many long-lasting friendships were made.

Following the round, the golfers from both countries enjoyed a lunch together, and an awards ceremony, while they discussed their great (and not-so-great) shots on the course.

Friday - R4 - Blackstone & Farewell Dinner

The Blackstone Course provided a magnificent finale for our event, with lovely views and a stunning course & layout.  The previous host of many top-end Asian events (including The Match at Mission Hills, featuring Tiger Woods v Rory McIlroy), the Blackstone course was
In the week-long Aggregate Stableford event, there were some solid performances throughout. Congratulations to Drew Hallam, who led from wire to wire, blitzing the field to take A Grade honours with 146 points. Next best were Shane Hazell on 132, and Geoff Steer on 131.
In B Grade, it was Ian Jolliffe taking the bikkies with 143, over Arvin Kumar on 128 and Mark Stephenson on 124.
In C Grade, it was Mark Rice on top with 122, followed by Ian Steer and Carl Rutledge, both on 113.

Extension - The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula

On Saturday, a large group of our players hopped on a luxury coach for a 2.5 hour transfer to The Sheraton Hotel, and The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula. Over the following three days, the players played the #1-rated club in China (Composite Course), and the #3 in Asia. The two 18-hole seaside courses (East & West) proved to be a bucket list treat for all, and were a highlight of the trip for all who played.

Tassie shines for 2024 SGA Tasman Classic

Tassie Shines for 2024 SGA Tasman Classic

Our 2024 SGA Tasman Classic was, in a word, sensational. The course, staff, weather (and players!) were all top notch. With plenty of sunshine and little-to-no wind, it was a perfect golf weekend.

Friday - R1 - Bougle Run

A spectacular day in Tassie for the first day of our 2024 SGA Tasman Classic. A booked-out field of golfers from across Australia descended upon Barnbougle for R1 of the event, which teed off at the 14-hole short course, Bougle Run. And though it is a short course, it was anything but easy, with tricky approaches, sloped greens and elevation changes. But it was most definitely a LOT of a fun.

Saturday - R2 - Barnbougle Dunes

Simply amazing weather on the Saturday, on a world-class course, for Round 2 of the 2024 SGA Tasman Classic. The day was a corker at Barnbougle Dunes, and the players were smiling ear to ear (despite a few lost balls, a thieving crow, and some tricky lies!).

Sunday - R3 - Lost Farm

A chilly morning greeting players on Sunday, but the cold temperatures soon gave way to glorious sunshine, with barely a cloud in the sky, and a bare whisper of a breeze. In short, it was a magnificent day for golf.

Congratulations to our winners: A Grade: Chris Harris on 52.5 points (pipping Darren Mason on 51.5.) B Grade: Chris O'Reilly on 50.5 points (narrowly edging Dean Connell on 50 points). C Grade: Tony Snoyman 57.5 points (and best overall) over Michael Soden, 52 points.
(In the SGA Staff competition, a fast-finishing Richard Fellner fell agonisingly short of a beating the fast-sinking Dean Miller. In the end, Deano captured the SGA bikkies by half a point!)

2024 SGA Autumn Classic a Blast in Bright

2024 SGA Autumn Classic a Blast in Bright and Myrtleford

PXL_20240421_032527614_web

Awesome weather, jaw-dropping scenery and a pair of wonderful golf courses greeted golfers at the 2024 SGA Autumn Classic, held in Victoria's High Country towns of Bright and Myrtleford on April 19-21, 2024

The booked-out field enjoyed sunshine, great golf, plenty of laughs and heaps of camaraderie, with some stellar scoring in the Pairs Better Ball and Individual Stableford competitions.

Friday - Warm-up Day

Many of the golfers enjoyed an early start to the weekend's festivities, taking part in the optional warm-up round at Bright GC. With blue skies, warm autumn weather and a golf course in top condition, the field were treated to fun, relaxing and rewarding day on the fairways.

Atholl Johnstone took the day's honours, with a solid 34 points. He edged Joel Matthews (32), with Duncan Lendrum third on 31. Rounding out the top 5 were Drew Hallam, Chris O'Reilly and Richard Fellner, all on 30 points.

Saturday - R1

A gorgeous day for Round 1, as our golfers teed it up at the beautiful Myrtleford Golf Club. The course proved to be a stern test, but thoroughly enjoyable.
In the individual comp, Tony Sturesteps and Chris Mchale jumped to the lead with 38 points, narrowly ahead of Paula Brockfield (37) and Michael O'Sullivan (34) and Matthew Leahy (34).
In the Teams Better Ball, Team Thompson + Sturesteps led the field on 43 points, ahead of Brockfield + de Silva (42), Jones + Burfield (41) and Bizzotto + Leahy (41)

Sunday - R2

Round 2 was a chilly (er...FRESH) morning. But when the sun came out, the guns came out, and there was some serious jockeying on the leaderboard.

In the Individual Event, Chris Mchale took top honours on a solid two-round total of 68 total points, edging Michael O'Sullivan and Tony Sturesteps on 66. Margaret Summerhill was one shot back on 65, with Phoebe Burfield rounding out the top 5 on 62 points.

The bushland setting features grand views of the Brindabella Ranges, contributing to the special place that is Federal Golf Course. Gold Creek

A true 18-hole championship layout, Gold Creek CC was designed by well-known and internationally-acclaimed Australian golfer and course architect, Bruce Devlin.  Opened in 1996, the course offers a great test for golfers of all abilities and strategy is key to play well here.

Gungahlin

Gungahlin Lakes

Gungahlin Lakes Golf Course is an 18-hole championship course characterised by its lakes, creeks and water carries. Whether it be the water, dogleg fairways or bunkers, each hole has its own unique challenge in getting to the large bent grass greens. 2025 Trans-Murray Match Play Accommodation

Trans-Murray Matchplay

The Hotel - Mantra on Northbourne

Mantra on Northbourne is perfectly located a short walk from the CBD and famous attractions such as Parliament House, the War Memorial and the National Gallery, and only a few metres from the city's thriving shopping precinct, hip bars and cool cafes.  They have Quad-Share accommodation in Two-Bedroom Apartments included in the package with the option to upgrade to a One-Bedroom Apartment (Single or Twin-Share) or a Single Hotel Room.

2025 Trans-Murray Match Play Format

The Trans-Murray Matchplay is a 3-day Teams event pitting teams from North and South of the Murray River. Each day's format mirrors the famous Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup matchplay events, with a combination of pairs (Best Ball and Alternate Shot) and singles matchplay. All golfers of all abilities are welcome to play. (Click here to see past results)

Round 1

Pairs Ambrose

Playing in teams of 2, each ambrose pair posts a stroke score for each hole and the best stroke score wins the hole. If the stroke score from each team is the same, the hole is halved. Teams which have the same handicap will play off scratch together. If a team has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole. Two shots difference = a shot on the two hardest holes and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Round 2

Pairs Alternate-Shot

Teams of 2 playing Alternate Shot with a twist. Players tee off, then team-mates swap drives and hit their second shot with their partner's ball. The team then chooses the best of the two shots, and continue alternating shots with the chosen ball. The best stroke score wins the hole. Teams off the same handicap will play off scratch. If a team has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Round 3

Singles Matchplay

One-on-One Matchplay. Each player is paired against a player from the opposite team. The best stroke score wins the hole. If the stroke score from each player is the same, the hole is halved. Players off the same handicap will play off scratch. If a player has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole. Two shots difference = a shot on the two hardest holes and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

  • 36 Holes of Golf

  • Individual and Pairs Stableford

  • 2 Nights' Accommodation

More information about the 2024 SGA Autumn Classic

Played on a pair of fun and challenging courses, in the gorgeous Victorian High Country, The 2nd Annual SGA Autumn Classic is set to be a cracker. Played as both an individual Stableford event AND two-person team Better Ball Stableford event, the weekend features our unique blend of fun, frivolity and excitement!

Bright GC

Bright Country Golf Club

Situated at the foothills of the Victorian Alps, the Bright Country Golf Club is considered to be one of Victoria's best regional courses. Nestled alongside the Ovens River, the unique 18-hole course, designed by Tony Cashmore, features a par-72, 6097m easy-walking layout with manicured grass greens and beautifully developed tree-lined fairways. The course is a favourite of SGA Staff ... especially as there are no bunkers! (But don't let that fool you, it is challenging, fun and spectacular.).

Myrtleford

Myrtleford Golf Club

Situated in the heart of the beautiful Ovens Valley, Myrtleford boasts an 18-hole course with tree-lined fairways - (some of the River Red gums are reputed to be 300 years old). It is a challenging course with accuracy at a premium on the narrow fairways and small greens. It's another easy-walking course, with most of the fairways being flat -- with only the 9th and 18th being on a hill.

Bright Chalet

The Bright Chalet

Located just outside of Bright, the Bright Chalet is a third-generation family business, which is popular year-round. Featuring 26 rooms over two floors, the chalet is the ideal home-base for our event. There is a full-service kitchen and dining area, dedicated bar, pool and function area. The rooms are comfortable and fully-equipped with large LCD screens, reverse-cycle air conditioning/heating, refrigerator, en-suite plus access to a balcony, with views of the surrounding mountains.

Event format - Single Stableford PLUS Pairs Better Ball

Here's everything you need to know about this 36-hole, weekend golfing adventure:

The Autumn Classic is a 36-hole golf tournament for amateur golfers. The event format for the individual grades is single stableford over two rounds. In addition, there is a team element (Pairs Better Ball/ 4BBB) event to add some extra fun and interest to the tournament. For this, only a team's best stableford score for each hole (i.e. Better Ball) is counted. These are added to make the daily team total. The team with the best total over two days wins the title.

Friday

Optional Warm-up

Get your weekend started early with an optional warm-up round. This will be an individual Stableford event, complete with prizes for the day

Saturday

Round 1

Individual Stableford PLUS Team Better Ball Stableford. A Team's best stableford score on each hole counts towards the Team Total.

Sunday

Round 2

Individual Stableford PLUS Team Better Ball Stableford. A Team's best stableford score on each hole counts towards the Team Total.

Rules:

  • Handicaps: Each pair will play via their official Golf Australia Handicaps, adjusted for the course/slope, etc. Daily results for all players will be entered on GOLF Link and will count towards players’ handicaps. Each player is personally responsible for ensuring that he or she is playing off the correct daily handicap on each day.
  • Nearest-the-Pin, plus Drive & Chip (NTP in 2 shots): will be held as some usual tasty ‘side action’ between teams.
  • Playoffs: In the event of a tie, a countback will be used to determine the winners.
  • Note that a player may only win one of the events (teams or singles). If the individual/singles winner is also one of the winning pairs team, then the next-highest-ranked individual score will be named the individual winner - this ensures we have three Champions for the event.
  • Prizes are awarded to the top Team, plus individual winner.

Entry subject to SGA Terms and Conditions

Set within a 3,000 acre nature preserve on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Jack's Point is an 18-hole par-72 golf course bounded by the Remarkables Mountain Range and Lake Wakatipu. It traverses through wetland to the Lake edge encountering steep bluffs, indigenous vegetation and wildlife. It is designed to work with nature, not against it. Fairways are designed with minimal excavation and careful plantings to complement the natural environment, but also to give the golfer a fighting chance.
