Cheshire Militia Pivot Men pilfer 2025 William Buckley Classic

The Cheshire Militia Pivot Men prevail at 2025 William Buckley Classic

The 20th running of the William Buckley Classic saw golfers from across the country descend upon the Bellarine Peninsula for a weekend of fun and frivolity.

Under cloudy skies, with plenty of wind throughout the weekend, the Portarlington, Queenscliff and (Host) Curlewis Golf courses presented our players with a challenging and thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

For the third time in 3 years, a pair of relative newcomers to SGA battled harder than the rest (both on the course, and in the post-round festivities) as they stormed home to victory, taking home the mighty Murrangurk Trophy.

Following a windy day on Round 1 at the lovely Queenscliff GC, a cloudy start for Round 2 at Curlewis gave way to warm sunshine, and the scoring on the magnificent Curlewis layout began to get as warm as the weather.

Many teams jostled atop the leaderboard all day, with one team, The Cheshire Militia Pivot Men (Harley Voelmle & Peter Weedon) breaking through for a victory via a solid 2-day 88 stableford points. Congrats boys! They pipped The Swan Island Hackers (Dean Baldry and Gavin Morris) on 86, followed by The Indented Heads (Anthony Moscato and Michelle Jarvis) on 85. Rounding out the Top-5 were The Torquay Hookers (Kathy Ridley and Zane Ridley) on countback over the fast-finishing The Wild White Men (Rob Robinson and Shaun Condron), both on 83.

Corowa Borrowers burgle 2025 Kelly Gang Shootout

A full field of 52 golfers made a gaolbreak for Rich River Golf Club for the 20th staging of The 2025 Kelly Gang Shootout. With sunny and clear skies throughout the weekend, the quality of play and raucous good times were on show.

And what a show it was -- especially from regular podium stars Ash Davis, Brendan Davis, Nick Randone and Adrian Dallas who stormed to victory on Sunday, courtesy of some stellar play. Their two-day total of 185, was enough to pip the fast-finishing Benalla Burglars (Gus Engley, Peter Engley, Braeden Philpin and Joel Simons) on 187, and the Jerilderie Gents (Mark Collis, Ben Forbes, Brian Bane and Bryce Amoroa) also on 187.

Ladies upstage the men at the 2025 SGA Autumn Classic

Ladies upstage the men at the SGA Autumn Classic!

2025AutumnClassicWinners_solo
2025AutumnClassicWinners_teams
Gorgeous weather, great people and a pair of magnificent golf courses set the stage for the 2025 SGA Autumn Classic over the weekend.

A total of 45 men and women golfers from across Victoria, NSW and WA competed in the event, which featured a combination of Solo Stableford and Pairs Best Ball, played over 36 holes at Bright Country Golf Club and Myrtleford Golf Club.

Notably, the ladies outplayed the men over the weekend, with the podium an all-girls affair (It's true: Girls Just Want to have fun, as witnessed by Marcella Broz's shirt on Sunday - see the photo!).
In the teams event, it was a nail-biting three-way tie for first on 90 total Stableford points, requiring a countback to determine the placings. Congratulations to 2025 champions Helen O’Shea and Jo Crowston, who pipped Di Francois and Rosie Trewin, followed by Rukshana Mohammed and Marcella Broz.
In the individual comp, the ladies also dominated the leaderboard. Di Francois blitzed the field with 78 total stableford points, followed by Marcella Broz on 73, and Helen O’Shea on 72. Congratulations, too, to Suba Thiruchenthuran, who captured the Friday warm-up round at Bright GC.

Thanks

We'd like to thank our host clubs, Myrtleford Golf Club and Bright Country Golf Club for having us. Special thanks to Michael and the team at Bright Chalet for the lovely accommodation, food and the assistance in hosting the event.

A warm thank you to all of our players for joining us for a great weekend - you are the reason why our events are so fun and successful. A special thanks to our sponsors, Srixon Australia & New Zealand, MGI Golf, Garmin Australia, Drummond Golf, Heathcote Winery and TCN for their generous prizes.

More information about the SGA Queenstown Golf Week

CrownePlazaQueenstown

Crowne Plaza Queenstown

Located in the heart of Queenstown, Crowne Plaza offers stunning panoramic views of The Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand's longest lake. The hotel is just across the road from Steamer Wharf, providing easy access to dining, bars, and entertainment, as well as cruises on the TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship.

The Hotel provides a range of excellent facilities, including valet parking, a business centre, fully equipped fitness centre, guest laundry and 24-hour room service.

Jack's Point

Set within a 3,000 acre nature preserve on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Jack's Point is an 18-hole par-72 golf course bounded by the Remarkables Mountain Range and Lake Wakatipu. It traverses through wetland to the Lake edge encountering steep bluffs, indigenous vegetation and wildlife. It is designed to work with nature, not against it. Fairways are designed with minimal excavation and careful plantings to complement the natural environment, but also to give the golfer a fighting chance.

Millbrook Resort (Coronet Course)

Set in a natural, alpine amphitheatre, the Millbrook Resort course (Home of the New Zealand Open) is one of the most impressive international golf arenas in the world. Featuring impeccably groomed fairways and greens, demanding hazards and meandering water courses, surrounded by the alpine backdrop of the Remarkables Mountain Range, golf at Millbrook Resort is an exhilarating experience. The 18-hole, par 72 championship course was designed by renowned professional and master golfer, Sir Bob Charles, and features four different tee positions for complete enjoyment at all levels of playing expertise.

Millbrook Resort (Remarkables Course)

Meandering between tarn-like ponds with spectacular 360-degree vistas of Millbrook, the Remarkables and Arrow nines have combined to form Remarkables 18, providing a truly memorable golfing challenge. Fast and true greens, fine turf quality and a stunning alpine setting combine to provide the golfing experience for which Millbrook is renowned. With the Crown Range and Arrow river valley providing mesmerising backdrops, focusing on the golf can be quite the test.

Queenstown Golf Club

Queenstown Golf Club at Kelvin Heights was recently voted New Zealand’s most scenic golf course and is internationally regarded as one of the World’s most picturesque. It is set in the amphitheatre of the famous Remarkable Mountain Range and surrounded by the pristine waters of Lake Wakatipu. The Course is ‘truly awesome’, offering not only a course that will test your skill but provides a golfing experience you will never forget. Queenstown Golf Club provides a unique challenge with undulating fairways framed by well-established Pine trees. The signature 5th hole playing across the Lake is one of New Zealand’s finest and most photographed.

Welcome and Presentation Dinners

Welcome Dinner - Skyline Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar

Sunday Evening, enjoy a sumptuous buffet dining experience at Skyline’s Stratosfare Restaurant & Bar at the top of the Gondola in Queenstown. Meet your fellow travellers (and their non-golfing partners) as you take in the panoramic views of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains.

Presentation and Farewell Dinner

Following Golf on Friday, enjoy a presentation ceremony and farewell dinner, where you will share laughs, stories of the week and a few beverages with your new golfing friends.

Round 3/4 (Split fields) Thursday/Friday

Lakelands

Since opening in February 1997, the wonderful Lakelands golf course has forged a deserved reputation as one of Australia's very best golf courses. Situated in the heart of the Gold Coast adjacent to the luxurious Radisson Resort and next door to Palm Meadows, Lakelands was the first signature designed course in Australia by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Lakelands is often described as a thinking player's course with a unique Nicklaus flavour to the design.

Palm Meadows
Round 3/4 (Split fields) Thursday/Friday

Palm Meadows

Palm Meadows was the first golf resort course on the Gold Coast, and pioneered the Australian resort golfing boom. The challenging 350-hectare par 72 course was designed by renowned course-designer Graham Marsh. It measures 6319 metres off the championship tees and the opening and closing holes are rated among the greatest in Australian golf. Water comes into play on 14 holes and there are 82 sand bunkers around the course.

“The work that goes in behind the scenes to make this event run so smoothly must be huge. But it is really appreciated. It’s great to just turn up and have everything organised for you. It’s a great, well organised event playing nice courses with great people.”

More information about the 2025 SGA Autumn Classic

Bright Country Golf Club

Situated at the foothills of the Victorian Alps, the Bright Country Golf Club is considered to be one of Victoria's best regional courses. Nestled alongside the Ovens River, the unique 18-hole course, designed by Tony Cashmore, features a par-72, 6097m easy-walking layout with manicured grass greens and beautifully developed tree-lined fairways. The course is a favourite of SGA Staff ... especially as there are no bunkers! (But don't let that fool you, it is challenging, fun and spectacular.).

Myrtleford Golf Club

Situated in the heart of the beautiful Ovens Valley, Myrtleford boasts an 18-hole course with tree-lined fairways - (some of the River Red gums are reputed to be 300 years old). It is a challenging course with accuracy at a premium on the narrow fairways and small greens. It's another easy-walking course, with most of the fairways being flat -- with only the 9th and 18th being on a hill.

The Bright Chalet

Located just outside of Bright, the Bright Chalet is a third-generation family business, which is popular year-round. Featuring 26 rooms over two floors, the chalet is the ideal home-base for our event. There is a full-service kitchen and dining area, dedicated bar, pool and function area. The rooms are comfortable and fully-equipped with large LCD screens, reverse-cycle air conditioning/heating, refrigerator, en-suite plus access to a balcony, with views of the surrounding mountains.

Event format - Single Stableford PLUS Pairs Better Ball

Here's everything you need to know about this 36-hole, weekend golfing adventure:

The Autumn Classic is a 36-hole golf tournament for amateur golfers. The event format for the individual grades is single stableford over two rounds. In addition, there is a team element (Pairs Better Ball/ 4BBB) event to add some extra fun and interest to the tournament. For this, only a team's best stableford score for each hole (i.e. Better Ball) is counted. These are added to make the daily team total. The team with the best total over two days wins the title.

Friday

Optional Warm-up

Get your weekend started early with an optional warm-up round. This will be an individual Stableford event, complete with prizes for the day

Saturday

Round 1

Individual Stableford PLUS Team Better Ball Stableford. A Team's best stableford score on each hole counts towards the Team Total.

Sunday

Round 2

Individual Stableford PLUS Team Better Ball Stableford. A Team's best stableford score on each hole counts towards the Team Total.

Rules:

  • Handicaps: Each pair will play via their official Golf Australia Handicaps, adjusted for the course/slope, etc. Daily results for all players will be entered on GOLF Link and will count towards players’ handicaps. Each player is personally responsible for ensuring that he or she is playing off the correct daily handicap on each day.
  • Nearest-the-Pin, plus Drive & Chip (NTP in 2 shots): will be held as some usual tasty ‘side action’ between teams.
  • Playoffs: In the event of a tie, a countback will be used to determine the winners.
  • Note that a player may only win one of the events (teams or singles). If the individual/singles winner is also one of the winning pairs team, then the next-highest-ranked individual score will be named the individual winner - this ensures we have three Champions for the event.
  • Prizes are awarded to the top Team, plus individual winner.

Mount Defiance Alliance capture 2024 William Buckley Classic

The Mount Defiance Alliance defy all to capture 2024 William Buckley Classic

The 2024 William Buckley Classic saw golfers from across the country descend upon the magnificent Moonah Links Resort for the 19th running of this event.

Under warm and mostly sunny skies all weekend, with a bit of wind in round 2, the Moonah Open and Legends courses presented our players with a challenging and thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

For the second time in 2 years, a pair of newcomers to SGA battled harder than the rest (both on the course, and in the post-round festivities) as they stormed home to a two-point victory, taking home the mighty Murrangurk Trophy.

Congratulations to The Mount Defiance Alliance (Michael Holt and Simon Alston), who fired back-to-back rounds of 44 stableford points to finish on 88, pipping The Point Addis Bashers (Ian Steer and Cam Thompson) who came agonisingly close with rounds of 44-43.  One putt...one chip...one lip-out over the weekend could have made the difference.

In third were The Sullivan Bay Gingerbread Men (Richard Fellner and Cameron Dunn) who sprinted to the line, but came up just short, with rounds of 41-44, for a total of 85.

An exciting 3-team sudden-death playoff decided the champions of the 2021 William Buckley Classic!

The William Buckley Classic Format

  • The William Buckley Classic is a 36-hole siege for teams of two playing two-ball ambrose.
  • Each team will be assigned a handicap by the organisers on the basis of official Australian handicaps and information supplied by the Bushrangers. The handicapper will be governed by a commitment to rewarding good play according to a player’s ability.

Rules:

  • Each member hits their shot, then chooses the best of the two, and continues play from there. Teams play their chosen best ball on each shot and may place their ball half a club length (about 50cms) from where the chosen ball lay, no nearer the hole. Balls must be placed in the same cut as the chosen ball. In the interests of fast play from tee to green, teams are NOT required to mark with a tee and precisely measure from the chosen ball as they play each shot. Once on the green, Bushrangers should mark near the chosen best ball so both team members play from near enough to the exact same position.
  • The event features a Rodeo Rule, which requires a minimum number of drives for each team member. Each team’s rodeo requirements will appear on their scorecard.
  • Nearest-the-Pin & Longest Drive: will be held as some usual tasty ‘side action’ between teams.

Playoffs:

  • In the event of a tie, a sudden-death playoff will be conducted. Teams play together as a twosome (taking alternate strokes playing one ball). Teams can determine the order as each member takes their first shot. This order is then continuous and carries over from one hole to the next until the playoff is decided.

Stringybark Creek Freaks snatch 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout

Stringybark Creek Freaks snatch 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout

The 2024 Kelly Gang Shootout proved, once again, to be one of our most popular annual events.

44 players made a gaolbreak for Tocumwal Golf Club for the 19th staging of this annual event. With cold and rainy conditions giving way to sunny and clear skies, the quality of play and raucous good times were on show throughout the weekend.

Despite being short-handed when one of their team pulled-out due to Covid, the 3-handed Stringybark Creek Freaks stormed to victory on Sunday, courtesy of some stellar play. Congratulations to Matthew Pitt, Mick David and Dave Warwick, who returned a two-day total of 210, pippingd the fast-finishing The Greta Mob (Michelle Jarvis, Anthony Moscato, Tracey Grigoriou and Joan Swallow) on 211, followed by The Benalla Burglars (Gus Engley, Peter Engley, Brad Vigilante and Andre Van Gent) on 212.

See full leaderboard below.

Hainan Island a tropical treat for 2024 Mission Hills Masters

Hainan Island a tropical treat for 2024 Mission Hills Masters

The 2024 Mission Hills Masters - Hainan Island, the inaugural China event co-hosted by SGA and AYM Golf Tours, proved to be (in the words of a few guests) one of our "best-ever events". Featuring a week of island fun (followed by an optional 3-day extension for even MORE golf), the event had it all: World-class golf, 5-star service, a lush & tropical setting and stunning scenery.

Sunday - 2024 Mission Hills Masters Welcome Dinner

A total of 57 players and their guests & partners were welcomed to the Mission Hills Masters at a sumptuous Welcome Dinner Buffet. They met their fellow players, enjoyed a few beverages and received their souvenir Tournament Polos, caps, bag tags and more.

Monday - R1 - Sandbelt Trails

Day 1 of the Mission Hills Masters proved to be a cracker! Playing the Sandbelt Trails course (modeled after Melbourne's famed golf region), our golfers were treated to an impeccably-presented golf course, knowledgeable (and friendly) caddies, and 5-star treatment all around. Despite some high temps and humidity, our players had an absolute blast.

Tuesday - R2 - Lava Fields

Another stellar day, hosted at the gorgeous Lava Fields course. What a course! The lava rocks (everywhere) provided not only a great setting, but also some unexpected bounces. And the immaculate greens and fairways were a joy! In the event, a few players began jockeying for position, with Drew Hallam leaping to the top of A Grade (38-38), Ian Jolliffe leading B Grade (37-37), and Carl Rutledge atop C Grade (24-34).

Wednesday - Rest Day

Wednesday was a well-earned rest day. While some golfers chose to play another round of optional golf on one of the many stunning par-3 courses at Mission Hills, many other golfers took the day to explore the Mission Hills Resort's shops, indulge in the free Spa (including 68 Volcanic Pools) or just chill by the sparkling pool.  Still others took the free shuttle to the city of Haikou (to explore shopping, the Zoo, and authentic Hainan Cuisine) or a quick trip to the shops and attractions at Mission Hills Centerville.

Thursday - R3 - The Vintage + The China & Australia Friendship Cup

Round 3 marked the inaugural China & Australia Friendship Cup. Held at the The Vintage Course, over 100 Australian and Chinese Golfers enjoyed a day of fun, friendship and camaraderie. This was a landmark occasion for all involved, with the language of golf transcending all barriers. Many long-lasting friendships were made.

Following the round, the golfers from both countries enjoyed a lunch together, and an awards ceremony, while they discussed their great (and not-so-great) shots on the course.

Friday - R4 - Blackstone & Farewell Dinner

The Blackstone Course provided a magnificent finale for our event, with lovely views and a stunning course & layout.  The previous host of many top-end Asian events (including The Match at Mission Hills, featuring Tiger Woods v Rory McIlroy), the Blackstone course was
In the week-long Aggregate Stableford event, there were some solid performances throughout. Congratulations to Drew Hallam, who led from wire to wire, blitzing the field to take A Grade honours with 146 points. Next best were Shane Hazell on 132, and Geoff Steer on 131.
In B Grade, it was Ian Jolliffe taking the bikkies with 143, over Arvin Kumar on 128 and Mark Stephenson on 124.
In C Grade, it was Mark Rice on top with 122, followed by Ian Steer and Carl Rutledge, both on 113.
Final leaderboard here (or see scoreboard below):

Extension - The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula

On Saturday, a large group of our players hopped on a luxury coach for a 2.5 hour transfer to The Sheraton Hotel, and The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula. Over the following three days, the players played the #1-rated club in China (Composite Course), and the #3 in Asia. The two 18-hole seaside courses (East & West) proved to be a bucket list treat for all, and were a highlight of the trip for all who played.

Thanks

Thanks to all of our "Foundation Players" for making this event a huge success! If you had a blast, tell your friends! (And get them on board for March next year!)
Thanks to May and the entire team at Mission Hills for hosting us. Thanks to Sheri at AYM Golf Tours for making it all possible. Thanks to Hainan Airlines Global for their partnership. And thanks to our sponsors Srixon Australia & New Zealand, Garmin Australia, Drummond Golf, MGI Golf, Heathcote Winery, and Card.Gift.
