Arrival and Check-in at The Gold Coast

Upon arrival at the glittering Gold Coast, you'll transfer to your home base for the week, the Mantra Legends Hotel. Featuring 4-star rooms, the hotel is right in the heart of the action, and provides everything you need for a fun and relaxing stay.

Sunday - Optional - Ambrose Day

Palmer Gold Coast (Robina Woods)

The week begins with an optional (and fun) Team Ambrose Golf Day, where you can warm-up for the week in a jovial and relaxing atmosphere. Carved out of 65 hectares of native woodlands, with fairways lined by towering gum trees, Palmer Gold Coast has rapidly developed a reputation as one of Queensland’s best-loved resort courses. Consistently ranked in the top 30 resort courses in the country, Palmer Gold Coast is a 6078 meter, 18-hole, Par 71 championship golf course designed by the Marsh / Watson team. A natural water-course featuring lakes, ponds, creeks and native wildlife completes a rare golf course environment.

RACV Royal Pines Resort has been recognised as a premier golf destination for over a decade. With undulating terrain, magnificent greens and tight fairways that demand respect, RACV Royal Pines is a great golf experience for players of all standards. With 27 Championship holes of golf, the facility features three distinct course combinations and three unique golfing experiences.

The Glades

Today, you'll tee it up on The Glades, regarded by many as the finest golf course on the Gold Coast. Designed by Greg Norman, the 6420m Championship layout opened in 1999 and rapidly developed a reputation as the best golf course on the Gold Coast. The facility features superb playing surfaces with unique “Creeping bent grass” greens that ensure a superior putting surface all year round. The Glades is on 65 hectares of land with a total of 98 bunkers. Norman not only had a vision to create a challenging golf course on the Gold Coast, but he also retained 9 hectares of wetland area to create a natural wildlife sanctuary within the course.

Links Hope Island

Designed by five-times British Open Champion, Peter Thomson and home to Australian golfing royalty, Peter Senior, Links Hope Island is a must-play on any visit to the region. Lakelands

Since opening in February 1997, the wonderful Lakelands golf course has forged a deserved reputation as one of Australia's very best golf courses. Situated in the heart of the Gold Coast adjacent to the luxurious Radisson Resort and next door to Palm Meadows, Lakelands was the first signature designed course in Australia by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Lakelands is often described as a thinking player's course with a unique Nicklaus flavour to the design.

Palm Meadows

Palm Meadows was the first golf resort course on the Gold Coast, and pioneered the Australian resort golfing boom. The challenging 350-hectare par 72 course was designed by renowned course-designer Graham Marsh. It measures 6319 metres off the championship tees and the opening and closing holes are rated among the greatest in Australian golf. Water comes into play on 14 holes and there are 82 sand bunkers around the course.

Awards Dinner and Presentation

Friday evening, you'll enjoy a massive night, as we wrap-up the week at the Presentation Ceremony and Closing Dinner. Share your week's memories with your old (and new) golfing mates as you enjoy a full sit-down dinner, complete with Beer/Wine/Drinks, live music and the all-important Awards, where we crown the Individual and Team champions. Our event will again feature great prizes totaling over $40,000, including Srixon, Garmin and MGI golf products, vouchers from The Card Network and Drummond Golf, and SGA Shiraz from Heathcote Winery. The evening also includes our highly-anticipated prize draw, where one player will win free entry to one of our events (including airfares) valued at over $2500.

Mantra Group - Hotels and Apartments

The SGA Championships features the Mantra Legends Hotel as our home base for the week. The hotel, featuring 4-star rooms, is right in the heart of the action, and provides everything you need for a fun and relaxing stay.

Golfers can choose to make their own accommodation arrangements for the event, however, staying at The Mantra will be a significant advantage for a range of reasons:

Transfers to and from the golf courses will all be from The Mantra.

Birdie Fever storms home for 2024 SGA Championships victory

Birdie Fever tops largest-ever field at 2024 SGA Championships

Social Golf Australia's 2024 SGA Championships saw the largest-ever field battle for victory in SGA's flagship event, with 136 golfers plus their partners making the trek to the gorgeous Gold Coast for a week of fun, sun and friendships.

The Four-Round Event, which included both Graded/Individual competitions as well as a Teams Competition, was contested over the week of August 25-30, 2024. It was played at some of Queensland's best golf courses: Links Hope Island, Lakelands, The Glades and RACV Royal Pines, with optional rounds at Palmer Gold Coast and Brookwater GC.

After a week of great golf, camaraderie and all-around fun, the competition began to heat up as the podium came into sight. There were some tight races in both the Grades and Teams events, with the results coming down to the last day (and in some cases, the very last hole.)

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING 2024 CHAMPIONS:

A Grade: Jason Beeston (Red Bears) made it back-to-back victories, taking top spot on 144 points, pipping Anthony Moscato (Birdie Fever) on 141. Third went to T-Rex (Stroke Kings) on 138.

B Grade: Mark Haase (Pin Flag Men), took the trophy on 139 over Neil Joliffe (Dude! Where's My Par?) on 133 and Jeff Stephens (Vic Invincibles) on 132

C Grade: Andrew Sharp (The Birdie Brothers) claimed victory on 137 points. 2nd went to Warrin Barrow (NSW All Stars) on 136, followed by Carl Ruttledge (Dude! Where's My Par?) on 132.

Ladies Grade: The largest-ever ladies field in SGA Championships history (30 competitors!) saw Rukshana Mohammed (Spice Girls) claim the hardware on 137 points, followed by Michelle Jarvis (Birdie Fever) on 132 points. Third went to Heather Alsop (The Grange Birdies) on 131 points.

Teams Result was a very tight race. After leading all week, team Dude! Where's My Par? (Carl Rutledge, Neil Jolliffe, Ian Jolliffe and Martin Greenhalgh - 406 points) couldn't muster enough in Round 4 to overcome a fast-finishing Birdie Fever (Anthony Moscato, Michelle Jarvis, Kina Hazell and Shane Hazell - 407 points). When the results were tabulated, Birdie Fever overcome an 11-point deficit in R4 to clutch victory.

The presentation award dinner capped our week of $40,000+ in prizes, and also featured our annual Raffle Draw, which included a highly-coveted MGI X1 Motorised Buggy, a $2500 Voucher to play in any SGA Major event, and vouchers for players to join us at a variety of SGA Events.

The Stroke Kings capture 2023 SGA Championships

The 2023 SGA Championships saw the largest-ever field compete in SGA's flagship event, with 129 golfers making the trek to the gorgeous Gold Coast for a week of fun, sun and friendships.

The Four-Round Event, which included both Graded/Individual competitions as well as a Teams Competition, was contested over the week of August 27-Sept 1, 2023. It was played at some of Queensland's best golf courses: RACV Royal Pines, Sanctuary Cove (The Palms course), The Glades and Palmer Gold Coast courses. PLUS, there were optional bonus rounds at Lakelands and Brookwater GC

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING 2023 CHAMPIONS:

A Grade: Jason Beeston (Red Bears) took top spot on 139 points, pipping Nick Sutherland (Birdie Fever) on 138 (who will rue a missed putt on 18). Third went to Kurt White (Par, Bogey, Beer, Birdie!) on 135.

B Grade had a THREE-WAY-TIE for first, all on 127 points. On Countback, the B-Grade Champion is Michael Houghton (VIC Invincibles), pipping Lindsay Scott (Redbacks SA) and Ronald Naidu (The Stroke Kings)

C Grade Champion was crowd favourite (and everybody's "Brah"), Frank Elisaia (Grumpy Old Men) on 131 points. 2nd went to Matt Carver (The Living Legends) on 127, followed by Ian Steer (The Harriets) on 122.

Ladies Grade also saw a Two-way tie for first, with Laurel Meyers (The One Putts) pipping Susan Okeby (Hole in Fun) on countback on 122 points. Third went to Lisa Garioch (Sunraysia) on 110 points - who notably went back-to-back-to-back-to-BACK on the Ladies Long Drive, nabbing the prizes in all 4 rounds!

The Teams Result was also a tight race, with plenty of rollercoaster-style action on the leaderboard all week. In the end, team Stroke Kings (Justin Gao, Ronald Naidu, Arvin Kumar and Thiruchenthuran Thiruloganathan (aka T-Rex) grabbed the hardware, with a 4-day total of 382 Stableford points. In second, two shots back, were "Par, Bogey, Beer, Birdie!" (Neill Smith, Kurt White, Paul White and Alex Robertson) on 380, with Birdie Fever (Anthony Jacobs, Nick Sutherland, Ryan Hassan and Richard Chatfield) rounding out the top 3 on 378.

The presentation award dinner was a fully-attended affair, with many stories exchanged between old and new mates. The night capped our week of $30,000+ in prizes, and also featured our annual Raffle Draw, which featured over $5000 in prizes, including vouchers for players and Non-Golfing Partners to join us at a variety of SGA Events, including our brand-new Mission Hills Masters - Hainan Island in June 2024.

There was also an emotional moment during the presentation dinner, when the Sally Pitt Award recipient was named. Long-time SGA player and supporter Ivan Jones was nearly brought to tears when his name was called. A worthy recipient of this prestigious award (which is awarded to the player for being honest, brave and kind, all the qualities that SGA Co-Founder Sally embodied, and by which she lived her life).

The wonderful Lakelands Golf Course has forged a deserved reputation as one of Australia's very best golf courses, and was the first signature designed course in Australia by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Team "Redbacks" dominate at the 2022 SGA Championships

The 2022 SGA Championships saw the largest-ever field compete in SGA's flagship event, the 2022 SGA Championships, with 116 golfers making the trek to the gorgeous Gold Coast for a week of fun, sun and friendships.

Following two years of Covid-forced obstacles, our golfers were champing at the bit to compete in the event, which featured over $30,000 in prizes, as well as 7 full days of perfect weather.

WARM-UP DAY

Players teed off at Palm Meadows for the traditional "Fun" Ambrose golf day. The day was a perfect warm-up for the week, played on a great course, in the glorious Gold Coast sunshine, with plenty of laughs and good times.

Following the golf, players all enjoyed the prize presentation, followed by the traditional Welcome Dinner.

ROUND 1

The 2022 SGA Championships officially teed off with Round 1 at the amazing Links Hope Island.

In perfect "Golf Conditions" the players thoroughly enjoyed their day, with Steve Francis taking the day's honours in the A-Grade/individual event, Tim Hibbard on top in B-Grade, Lindsay Scott capturing C-Grade and Kina Hazell atop the Ladies Grade. In the Teams event, it was Team 1770 in first, closely followed by Redbacks SA and NSW All Stars 2.

ROUND 2

Round 2 of the 2022 SGA Championships saw golfers enjoy the stunning, private Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club's Pines Course. One of the most challenging and enjoyable courses of the week, The Pines was a favourite of the field, and had our golfers smiling from ear to ear.

Daily results: A Grade: Dennis Williams, B-Grade: Lincoln Tucker, C-Grade: Lindsay Scott, Ladies: Andrea Ray.

Daily Teams: Redbacks SA took 1st, 3 Kiwis and a Convict captured 2nd, and SGA Vic Tour 1 were in 3rd.

REST DAY - BROOKWATER

Wednesday was a (for some) much-needed "Rest Day", which gave some golfers the opportunity to chill out, hit the beach, etc.

Some others, however, teed it up at the amazing Brookwater for a "Bonus Round of golf". One of the best (if not THE best) courses in Queensland, Brookwater proved a treat for the golf-mad players who made the trip.

ROUND 3

On the Thursday, competitors arrived at Palmer Colonial for Round 3 of the event. Originally scheduled for Palmer Gold Coast/Robina Woods, the SGA Team made the call to move the round to Colonial due to poor playing conditions on Robina's front-nine (following months of rain on the Gold Coast). The SGA Team had anticipated a move such as this, so had previously arranged tee times at Colonial as a contingency/back-up measure.

The day featured the inaugural "SGA Dress-Up Day", where golfers were encouraged to emulate long-time fashionista Stuart "Krusty" Carlisle, and wear something colourful and fun.

Daily Results: A-Grade: Rhys Hugglestone, B-Grade Tim Hibbard, C-Grade: Lindsay Scott, Ladies: Jackie Penno.

Teams Daily: 1: Redbacks SA, 2: No Wuks Given, 3: Fairway to Heaven.

ROUND 4

Mother Nature continued to shine, with Round 4 played under perfect conditions at the remarkable Lakelands GC.

Daily Results: A-Grade: Troy Tracey, B-Grade: Stuart Carlisle, C-Grade: John Banfield, Ladies: Maureen Mathews.

Daily Teams: Team 1770, followed by Redbacks SA, and (2021 Champs) Happy Days.

When the scores were tallied at the end of the day, team "Redbacks SA" found themselves at the top. With a 3-round aggregate of 415 Stableford points they obliterated the field. They pipped Team 1770 (380 points) and NSW All-Stars 2 (also on 380)

Congratulations to Lindsay Scott, Lincoln Tucker, Bruce Russell and Andrew McPherson. They have taken home the 2022 SGA Championships Team Trophy, and will have their name etched on the perpetual trophy, and included (digitally) on the SGA Championships Honourboard.

And for individual results, Dennis Williams was the individual A-Grade champion, finishing with a 4-round total of 134 Stableford points. He pipped Troy Tracey and David Warwick, both on 130. B-Grade saw Johnny Nguyen on top with 134 points, over Lincoln Tucker (133) and Trevor Slogrove on 130. C-Grade had Lindsay Scott on top with an incredible 144 points, followed by Thanh Tran on 125 and Gav Doran on 124. For the Ladies Division, Lois Fyfe took top honours with 125 points, winning on countback over Kina Hazell. Andrea Ray took 3rd on 122.

Happy Days prevails at the 2021 SGA Championships

Team "Happy Days" prevails at the 2021 SGA Championships

The 2021 SGA Championships was, put simply, like no other SGA Championships in the history of the event.

Following months of uncertainty around Covid-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions, SGA made the call to shift the event from the traditional August timeslot to October. It was hoped that this change would allow golfers from outside of Queensland to be able to travel to the Gold Coast without quarantine or travel restrictions. However, even a two-month delay was not enough, as border restrictions tightened even further. The event was thus limited only to golfers from Queensland.

In the end, a small group of 19 hearty Queenslanders teed it up for the event. And what the group lacked in quantity, they more than made up for in quality.

WARM-UP DAY

Players teed off at Lakelands for the traditional "Fun" Ambrose golf day. The day was a perfect warm-up for the week, played on a great course.

Following the golf, players all enjoyed the prize presentation, followed by the traditional Welcome Dinner.

ROUND 1

The 2021 SGA Championships officially teed off with Round 1 at RACV Royal Pines Resort. Sadly, Covid restrictions and border closures meant it was the smallest field in our Championships history (with our normal 100+ field whittled down to 19).

In very pleasant "Golf Conditions" the players thoroughly enjoyed their day, with Glenn Burgess taking the day's honours in the A-Grade/individual event. (With the smaller-than-normal field, the usual A/B/C grades were combined into one.)

ROUND 2

It was Deja Vu all over again...

While Day 2 of the 2021 SGA Championships had a different course (this time, the lovely Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club's Palms Course), it had a similar finish. Glenn Burgess once again found himself on the podium. It seems that Glenn may have had his eyes on some sort of unprecedented wire-to-wire victory at this event.

ROUND 3

Following a much-needed "Rest Day" (which gave some golfers the opportunity to rest, while some others teed it up at Palmer Gold Coast for a "Bonus Round of golf"), competitors arrived at The Glades for Round 3 of the event.

Unfortunately, Round 3 was soon washed-out by exceptionally heavy rains which battered the Gold Coast (and much of Queensland and NSW).

This is the first time in the SGA Championships history that SGA were forced to cancel a round, and we (and the players) were all gutted to be forced off the course.

The call was soon made to reduce the event to a 3-round tournament.

ROUND 3 (Take 2)

Mother Nature continued to batter the Gold Coast with overnight (and early morning) rains, but after a short delay, the skies cleared, and our players took to the Palm Meadows course for Round 3.

When the scores were tallied at the end of the day, team "Happy Days" found themselves at the top. With a 3-round aggregate of 298 Stableford points (including a magnificent 102 points on the final day), they obliterated the field.

Congratulations to Glenn Burgess, Jan Booth, Maureen Mathews and Russell Mathews. They have taken home the 2021 SGA Championships Team Trophy, and will have their name etched on the perpetual trophy, and included (digitally) on the SGA Championships Honourboard.

And for individual results, it will come as no surprise that Glenn Burgess was the individual champion, having dominated all week, and finishing with a wire-to-wire-leading 3-round total of 104 Stableford points. Well done, Glenn. Runner-up in individual was Neil Jolliffe, followed by Ian Hoather, both of the "Capricorn Can't Play Golf" team.

2022 SGA Championships Courses

OPTIONAL WARM-UP ROUND - SUNDAY

Palm Meadows

Palm Meadows was the first golf resort course on the Gold Coast, and pioneered the Australian resort golfing boom. The challenging 350-hectare par 72 course was designed by renowned course-designer Graham Marsh. It measures 6319 metres off the championship tees and the opening and closing holes are rated among the greatest in Australian golf. Water comes into play on 14 holes and there are 82 sand bunkers around the course.

ROUND 1. MONDAY

Links Hope Island

Designed by five-times British Open Champion, Peter Thomson and home to Australian golfing royalty, Peter Senior, Links Hope Island is a must-play on any visit to the region. The course regularly rates among the finest resort courses in the country. When you play at Links, you'll be met with a real sense of welcome and warmth from the time you arrive.

ROUND 2. TUESDAY

Sanctuary Cove - The Pines

As Australia's only Arnold Palmer signature course, The Pines Course is recognised as one of Australia's best and most challenging courses. The Pines is carved through 101 hectares of established pine forest, the course features corridor approaches to several holes, with lakes guarding others. Fourteen of the holes are contoured around six man-made lakes. An abundance of wildlife features on The Pines including rare bird life and scores of native Australian kangaroos.

Carved out of 65 hectares of native woodlands, with fairways lined by towering gum trees, Palmer Gold Coast has rapidly developed a reputation as one of Queensland’s best-loved resort courses. Consistently ranked in the top 30 resort courses in the country, Palmer Gold Coast is a 6078 meter, 18-hole, Par 71 championship golf course designed by the Marsh / Watson team. The rolling fairways, manicured greens, and towering eucalyptus are strikingly beautiful and blend harmoniously with the surrounding residential development. A natural water-course featuring lakes, ponds, creeks and native wildlife completes a rare golf course environment.

Lakelands Golf Course

Since opening in February 1997, the wonderful Lakelands golf course has forged a deserved reputation as one of Australia's very best golf courses. Situated in the heart of the Gold Coast adjacent to the luxurious Radisson Resort and next door to Palm Meadows, Lakelands was the first signature designed course in Australia by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Lakelands is often described as a thinking player's course with a unique Nicklaus flavour to the design.

RACV Royal Pines Resort

RACV Royal Pines Resort has been recognised as a premier golf destination for over a decade. Featuring undulating terrain, magnificent greens and tight fairways that demand respect, RACV Royal Pines is a great golf experience for players of all standards. With 27 Championship holes of golf, the facility features three distinct course combinations and three unique golfing experiences.

Sanctuary Cove - The Palms

Designed to challenge players of all abilities, The Palms Golf Course is considered a championship course rivalling some of the best golf courses in Australia. It is now ranked in Australian Golf Digest’s Top 50 golf courses. The Glades

The Glades is regarded by many as the finest golf course on the Gold Coast. Designed by Greg Norman, the layout opened in 1999 and features some superb golf holes and a great test of golf for players of all abilities. The 6420-metre par 72 Championship layout opened in 1999 and rapidly developed a reputation as the best golf course on the Gold Coast. The facility features superb playing surfaces with greens that are unique on the Gold Coast. The greens are a type of “Creeping bent grass” that ensure a superior putting surface all year round. The Glades is on 65 hectares of land with a total of 98 bunkers. Norman not only had a vision to create a challenging golf course on the Gold Coast, but he also retained 9 hectares of wetland area to create a natural wildlife sanctuary within the course.
