Tassie shines for 2024 SGA Tasman Classic

Tassie Shines for 2024 SGA Tasman Classic

Our 2024 SGA Tasman Classic was, in a word, sensational. The course, staff, weather (and players!) were all top notch. With plenty of sunshine and little-to-no wind, it was a perfect golf weekend.

Friday - R1 - Bougle Run

A spectacular day in Tassie for the first day of our 2024 SGA Tasman Classic. A booked-out field of golfers from across Australia descended upon Barnbougle for R1 of the event, which teed off at the 14-hole short course, Bougle Run. And though it is a short course, it was anything but easy, with tricky approaches, sloped greens and elevation changes. But it was most definitely a LOT of a fun.

Saturday - R2 - Barnbougle Dunes

Simply amazing weather on the Saturday, on a world-class course, for Round 2 of the 2024 SGA Tasman Classic. The day was a corker at Barnbougle Dunes, and the players were smiling ear to ear (despite a few lost balls, a thieving crow, and some tricky lies!).

Sunday - R3 - Lost Farm

A chilly morning greeting players on Sunday, but the cold temperatures soon gave way to glorious sunshine, with barely a cloud in the sky, and a bare whisper of a breeze. In short, it was a magnificent day for golf.

Congratulations to our winners: A Grade: Chris Harris on 52.5 points (pipping Darren Mason on 51.5.) B Grade: Chris O'Reilly on 50.5 points (narrowly edging Dean Connell on 50 points). C Grade: Tony Snoyman 57.5 points (and best overall) over Michael Soden, 52 points.
(In the SGA Staff competition, a fast-finishing Richard Fellner fell agonisingly short of a beating the fast-sinking Dean Miller. In the end, Deano captured the SGA bikkies by half a point!)

The route, which includes some of the highest points of the entire Barnbougle complex, is set slightly back from the coastline, providing aerial-like views over the Lost Farm Course and Anderson’s Bay. Notes re: Air Travel to Barnbougle / Tasmania

Commercial flights from around Australia fly in to Launceston, which is a one-hour drive from Barnbougle. Car hire is available at the airport and there is a bus that regularly transfers golfers from Launceston airport to Barnbougle Dunes. There are Travel Directions and Airport Transfers pages with info on the Barnbougle website.

When booking commercial flights:

  • Note that the drive from Launceston Airport to Barnbougle Dunes is a solid 90 minutes. Book your inbound flights accordingly (the night before is generally your best option).
  • We recommend booking your return flight (Sunday) for after 5pm, to allow for golf, presentations and transfer back to Launceston.

NOTES RE CAR HIRE

If you are planning to hire a car in Launceston, we HIGHLY recommend you book it WELL IN ADVANCE, as there is a shortage of hire cars in the area. It is also much cheaper the earlier you book.

Event Format

The Tasman Classic features a Stableford format over the three rounds of the event with an Order of Merit points system, where, each day, player's scores are ranked from first to last. The points for the three rounds are totalled, and the player(s) with the greatest points are declared the winners.

Prizes are awarded to the A, B and C-Grade winners. (Depending on field size)

Tassie Treat: Golfers have a blast at Barnbougle & Lost Farm

2022 Tasman Classic - Barnbougle Dunes

Tassie Treat: Golfers have a blast at Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm at 2022 Tasman Classic

Fantastic weather and two spectacular golf courses provided a memorable setting for 37 SGA golfers at the 2022 Tasman Classic.

Held over 3 days on Tasmania's world-famous Barnbougle Dunes and Barnbougle Lost Farm Courses, the event was an absolute cracker. Three rounds of golf, plus some bonus holes on the brand-new Bougle Run, gave our golfers the chance to experience some of the best golf in Australia (and the world!)

The weather for the entire weekend was mint! Hardly a breath of wind, with plenty of sunshine. And while some may chalk it up to luck, the SGA management team contends that the heaps of preparation and research into scheduling may have played its part as well.

Each golfer received a dozen Srixon Balls prior to tee off, with a few noting they'd lost half of them on the first 3 holes! Most of the golfers found the rugged and challenging Barnbougle Dunes (Saturday) to be the harder of the two layouts. As a result, some very good golfers got a smack that day. Cameron "Jonesy" Jones was the exception; with four 4-pointers, Jonesy was the only one to beat his handicap.

A bonus to the weekend was the new Barnbougle Run short course, which was fantastic fun. Many of the golfers had a go over the weekend and everyone absolutely loved it. It also was a great alternative for those who were a bit sore, or who didn't want to take on a full 18 holes on Sunday.

The Tasman Classic event consisted of three rounds: Stableford on Days 1 (Farm) and 2 (Dunes), with a Par round on Day 3 (Farm).  An Order of Merit system awarded points for each of the three rounds depening on placement.

Well done to Glen McMillan and Richard Knowles on winning A and B grade respectively.

Overall, it was an outstanding result, and we look forward to seeing you all next year!

TRAVEL RESOURCE

Still deciding which way to fly? Before you book, check out our article: Chartered vs Commercial: Which is (really) the better deal?

Air Travel to The Barn & The Farm

There are two recommended travel options:

OPTION 1: Vortex Air charter flights with SGA from Moorabbin or Essendon

SGA have chartered return flights with our partner Vortex Air from both Moorabbin and Essendon Airports.  These can seat up to eight people on each flight, take less than an hour's flight time, and land right next to the course.

(As SGA is carrying the risk of empty seats on the planes, to reserve your place on a charter flight, please pay a $300 deposit to SGA by three months prior to the event and the balance of the payment by two months prior with your event entry payment. Cancellations of flight bookings will receive a refund of the deposit only if we have no empty seats on planes – if we have empty seats, any cancellations will not receive a refund as those monies will offset SGA’s incurred costs of empty seats on the charter flights.)

OPTION 2: Commercial flights

Commercial flights from around Australia fly in to Launceston which is a one-hour drive from Barnbougle. Car hire is available at the airport and there is a bus that regularly transfers golfers from Launceston airport to Barnbougle Dunes. There are Travel Directions and Airport Transfers pages with info on the Barnbougle website.

The 2021 SGA Tasman Classic – Top fun in Tasmania

Golfers at Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm, 2021

Top fun in Tasmania at 2021 Tasman Classic

SGA Golfers tackle Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm

Nearly 70 SGA golfers teed it up over the weekend of April 30-May 2, 2021 for the 2021 Tasman Classic. They enjoyed 54 holes of high-quality golf over three days, with rounds of golf at the breathtaking and world-renowned courses: Barnbougle Dunes and The Lost Farm on Tasmania’s main island.

Apart from a quick bit of fog that seemed to disappear almost as quickly as it arrived, the weather was spectacular - with the "raingear" never making an appearance. Great fun was had by all.
Congratulations to the following 2021 Tasman Classic players who won their respective flights:
A Grade
Michael Freake, winning by 6 points over Raymond Berzins, followed by Nick Sutherland and overnight leader Steve Lambrakakis.
B Grade
Jerry Nguyen, 3 points over Glen McMillan, followed by Adam Sutton & Stan Kommo
C Grade
Rebecca Heng, by ONE POINT over Anh Nguyen, with Simon Lovett & Nilesh Singh rounding out the top-3.
